I found this today.
http://www.whitehat.com.au/Australia...ventionsA.html Bloody amazing what can happen if you have an "I wonder if I can solve this" attitude rather than the "Someone else should do this for me" or "This is too hard for dumb people/too dangerous/does not fit into my social agenda" dogma that seems to abound lately. |

Thanks for that link.
On my travels most do not believe or know that Aussies invented polymer notes... I think I'll need to remember some more Aussie firsts for future conversations. Cheers, Jason. |

The Xerographic process is a big one - heart of most photocopiers and laser printers...
Also, interscan - a type of ILS (Instrument landing system) for aircraft.. The ideas are there, it just seems to be that we can't commercialise them particularly well... except for the Wiggles maybe - they've made a mint. |

Good thread Flappist
I remember Jeremy Clarkson bagged Australians as only inventing the Hills Hoist on one episode of Top Gear. This happened whilst I was in the UK and copped a ribbing about it at work the next day If only I had access to this thread then! |

Australia is meant to have more inventions (per capita) then the rest of the world, unfortunately the investment is not in this country so it normally goes OS.

The two I don't think you can go past are, The Pacemaker, and Penicillin. While we have had plenty that have made life easier, these two have made life livable.

Another invention is DME (Distance Measuring Equipment). This equipment is still used in aircraft today. It measures the distance from the aircraft to the runway, to put it plain and simple. GPS is seen as being more accurate these days though.

GPS requires satellites that are controlled by outside forces, DME/VOR is local to the aid and aircraft. I have had several experiences when GPS has fallen over. Never had a letdown go wrong (well other than me stuffing it up of course) |

I still reckon one of our best inventions was the Racecam technology pioneered in the late 70's by Channel 7 and now used worldwide.
Cheers Russ PS: I believe radar is generally credited to a Scot named Watt who was some relative of James Watt (inventor of the steam engine).
