yes its real!

FIGURES RELEASED by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show new car sales for the month of July were down 77 per cent, compared to the same period in 2008.

Just 3,759 new cars were registered in July, compared to 16,386 in July 2008. However this fall in sales is not as dramatic as it might appear, as July 2008 marked the changeover to the current emission-based VRT system and so sales were unusually high.

Brian Cooke of SIMI said: “There has been a drop in sales from July last year but last July’s figures were just as we converted to a new VRT system and many new car owners were waiting until then to purchase their new car.

“This dynamic is not there this year. July is traditionally a quiet month for trading in the motoring industry in terms of new cars.”

Overall car sales for the year remain 64 per cent down compared to year-to-date figures for 2008, with just over 50,000 cars registered.

“We have seen an increase in used car activity in dealerships but the main obstacle for customers seeking to buy continues to be the lack of available finance,” said Mr Cooke.

Figures for the number of imported used cars is also down significantly. Just 3,641 used cars were imported in July, compared to 7,233 in July 2008, which equates to a drop of 49 per cent

Default Cruze rollout a success

It looks like the small car segment is continuing to boom.

I have to agree, my wife said last night after watching a cruze add on tv that we should trade in a car and get one, why? i asked. "it looks great and its a holden" havent spoken to her since.

Point being they have hit their market perfectly.

I think this comment is BS, Mazda3 sold 3741 in it's first month is already down to 2800 in July. You're always going to get a lift with a new model, especially when you've been advertising it for months prior to launch (as in the case of the Cruze). Astra's & Viva's have been in stort supply as they're in run out, and the Cruze is replacing both. I wouldn't count my chickens just yet.

I wonder what effect Cruze sales are having on Commodore, it's not number one this month.

Poor result for Cruze. Under 2000 units, only half as much as Corolla and on the back of all that advertising as well. At least expected it to knock off Mazda but couldn't manage that feat either.

Would be interested to know if it's Astra/Viva/Commodore customers going over to Cruze or if they are actually attracting any new customers.

Trying to build a wave on a month of sales, Holdens fly flyers are always on the ball.

Now, do we have VFACTS figures yet so we can stop talking about Cruze? Enough Holden threads already!

OMG, how people can have such Ford glasses on is unbelievable somethings.. The Sedan only Cruze result is nothing short of fantastic.. End of story, I'm not going to get shot down again, becuase of Ford glassed people!!

And the comment of a slow start is about a brand new name plant, not just a new model.

We might be waiting a while as the journo's have got to think of a positive way of telling us Holden sold less than 3800 Commodores last month. No wonder GMH launched their new engines yesterday...

Just like everything else Holden, the Cruze name is recycled.

Is this link below usually the place where monthly stats are found? If so where do you find stats for individual car makers

I am disappointed the Focus and especially the Fiesta are not in the top 10, the Focus is far better than the Corolla and the Fiesta has to be the best (if not equal with the more expensive Polo) in it's class.

Yep, Ford really don't grasp how to sell the Focus and Fiesta, the Fiesta is by far the best in class technically and in looks by a looooong way but isn't selling many. The Focus should sell just as many as anything else in it's class too but it doesn't...... It does everywhere else in the world so it's pretty much only Ford Australia to blame

Maybe the companies selling more cars are selling at smaller margins to Ford, who may not be discounting and are happy to sell less at more margin. Why sell 3000 Fiestas at $15,000each or less like a Getz and make $1000 per car when you can sell 1000 Fiestas at an average price of $18000 and make $4000 per car?

Problem with the Fiesta is the lame drivetrain when you option the auto.
Still think its a supply issue with them at the moment too

While it would be good to have the 1.6 in auto i wouldn't be so quick to attack the 1.4. For one, its not like people are buying auto light cars for the horsepower is it? Secondly, i doubt you'd be at any real disadvantage when dragging off a 1.5 (let alone 1.3) auto yaris....not that this scenario is very likely.

Its a combination of supply, premium pricing (even if it is worth it) and the usual public perception. It will take FOrd time to overcome this brand awareness issue....it took years of 'ford=falcon' to build it up and it will probably take nearly as long to spread the word the ford not only make great cars but a lineup of great cars.

Funny thing is that when i talk to people about Fords now i sense a slow realisation that they build 'quality'. Its only the diehard Holden bogan that resist this. Even people who aren't going to buy a Ford are starting to realise that they have some quality kit and aren't 'looking down' on Ford like you used to see. Im talking in that 3-4 years i have noticed this.

Fiesta will NEVER outsell Getz and Yaris, Getz is a lot cheaper than Fiesta will ever be, and Yaris while still cheaper, is an automatic choice for most of it's customers, people that will buy a Getz or Yaris, will rarely buy anything else. As for Focus and Mondeo, well Ford probably could lift their game to sell more of them, but then the question is, would they need to drop profit margins to do so, if so is it worth it?
