Default New McLaren F1

To be released in 2011

New McLaren supercars target Ferrari
Jez Spinks, drive.com.au, April 23, 2009

Formula One team McLaren will take its intense rivalry with Ferrari from the track to the road with a new range of supercars.

The British racing outfit that in the 1990s boasted the world’s fastest production car – the F1 – will launch its first new model in 2011.

McLaren believes the economic conditions will have improved by then and has told media it is planning to build up to 4000 supercars a year by 2015, under a new spin-off company called McLaren Automotive.

The first supercar has been in development for two years and has been photographed by Drive’s spy cameras during cold-weather testing.

It is expected to be similar in size to Ferrari’s F430, with 1000 built in 2011 – considerably more than the 100 McLaren F1s made between 1993 and 1998.

McLaren is seeking new investors for its supercar program, after announcing previously it would end at the end of 2009 its SLR road-car co-operation with majority shareholder and F1 engine partner Mercedes-Benz.

McLaren Automotive will be led by Ron Dennis, who has stepped down from running the F1 team having steered the marque to multiple world championships since 1980.

The company opened a stunning new technical centre in 2004 to incorporate both its F1 and supercar programs, though an additional new factory is also planned for what is believed will be a three-model range.

The original McLaren F1 was powered by a BMW V12 engine and was the world’s fastest product car between 1998 and 2005, before it was dethroned by the Bugatti Veyron.

That front end looks suspiciously similar to the F430 too.

will the car take the title as the fastest production car again though? who;s got the title now, koenigsegg isn't it? anyway, agreement. that thing is hardly distinguishable from the next supercar.

i do not want them to release something like that. the original was the most awesome car ever built in my opinion. nothing was compromised

as has been suggested, this one looks like every other car out there - and i may be weird, but none of the cars it has been compared to inspire me

the mclaren should be a stand alone model - no more, unless of course it is built with the same principles as the original

The next car they will build will be a replacement for the McLaren F1. This P11 is just an entry level model to compete with the F430 and Gallardo.

What!

No central driving position, what a pretender. The F1 will always rule IMHO.

Side profile has a hint of F1 in it...

Perhaps the 360/430 took hints from the F1...

You guys do realise that it takes a couple of million dollars to tool up for individual tail lights don’t you?

That’s the reason why the Aston Martin DB7 uses Mazda 323 tail lights and the original F1 cleverly used tail lights from a commercial truck.

And of course it is an engineering prototype that wont closely resemble the final model (thinks back to the early 70’s and journalists gain access to Jaguar’s test area. They pull back the sheet on a Jaguar XJS and think that it is a cobbled together engineering hack of the rumoured E-type replacement, they don’t bother taking photos as why would the company make something like this. Months later the XJS that they could’ve scooped is introduced as a production model – flying buttresses and all…....)

^^^Oh come on not a dose of reality! Above points are always over looked.

Agree that nothing that will beat the original F1 no matter how many pooftenths of a second this one is quicker.

Surely it will be compromised given the current financial BS.
