Default AU XR6 5spd issues

Can anyone give me advice on the standard 5 spd box, and whether its a common issue where once the car is warmed up it can be a little difficult slipping into 1st when the car is stationary?

There just seems to be a bit of resistance there when you are at lights (say) and try to put it into 1st. However its fine if you put it into another gear initially, then back out and into 1st. Seems to open it up for smoother operation.

Common problem to this box, or does it need a service?

The car has 138ks on the clock.

Cheers!

Normal operation.

My T5 in both my AU and BA XR6 did exactly this. However a transmission flush and new clutch in the BA did alleviate 'most' of the issue (become a 1/50 event rather than 1/5)

Well , on my ED there was a nut on the firewall where the the clutch cable comes through - that nut needs to be done up / loosened as needed. My ED was hard going into 1st but this fixed it...

That is pretty normal with most manuals. Just put it inti 1 and forward inch and then try reverse again. I bet it will go in no problems.

Question - Have the repair manual out thinking about changing the gearbox oil as a good NY's day activity. However the author appears to have the entire box out in the photo's (not going to happen here) so i'm curious to know whether you guys know of a method of draining/refilling in the absence of a workshop pit etc...

I have ramps, jacks, etc however these will hardly keep the car level, and I note that filling the box appears to require the car to be on a level situation.

Ideas?

Yep, AU's are the same. I used to have this problem on my AU1 XR6, and adjusting the clutch used to fix it. It does chew through clutches though... I've had the car for 2 years, and gone through 5 clutches... I drive it hard, but i wouldnt have thought it was hard enough to go through 5... any one else chew through clutches?

Jack ya car up, and on the side of the box there is a drain plug, unscrew it let all the oil drain out.. screw it back in..
above that there is a filler plug, undo it, and run a piece of hose up through the engine bay with a funnel, and the other end into the box obviously, and poor the oil in.. takes 1.9L to fill..
this is the only way i managed to do it without having a pump or anything..

xr6stu, sounds like you've got problems with your clutch type.. next time it goes, try a heavy duty excedy or xtreme...

Just done an oil change this afternoon, included the lubrizol additive, and it seems problem sorted. Plus its smoother operation between the gears. Shifts just like new!

Thanks for your advice!
