Hi all,

Is it possible to get biggers holes cut into te rear shelf of my EL to accomodate my 6*9 speakers? I ask this because from what I can see, the actual metal would have to be cut into, would that structurally affect the car?

Also, whats the best way to sound deaden the rear shelf? I'm sick of vibrations from the speakers. Sounds like crap.

hey mate,
well i had a talk to the guys at autobarn when i was getting my system done. and i asked him about the 6X9's in the parcel shelf and he said it is legal to cut into the metal to accomadate for the larger speakers and i know that if you take it to autobarn they will be able to cut the hole to the right size for you.
And for the vibrations i suggest maybe try some sound matting?? improves sound quality and stops vibrations (also at autobarn).

Bin the 6x9's. Best answer.

I never use or recomend them. You will get better results without them

Also cutting the shelf is illegal.

hey man your location is posted as Cairn I had 6x9's fitted to the parcel shelf of my EF when i lived in cairns fitted buy Autobarn they did a top job but this was a few years ago not sure if the same people are still there. They used spacers to raise the speakers and didnt have to cut the metal i think just some of the padding and stuff on the shelf. I sold the car a while back so cant go have a look for you.

youll have to run spacers... a serious set of 6 inch splits will do an awesome job, i got clarion in mine, and damn it's louder then the 6x9's in my old car

i just put 6'' in the back still sounds pritty good- but there was no hastle at all to put them in. just had to screw them in with a 90 degree drill

Which Autobarn told you it was legal to cut your parcel tray????
Its illegal and none of our installers are allowed to do it whatsoever! Shaving a few mm's off isnt an issue, but not to cut it up. I used spacers for my 6x9s and they work a treat and look very professional as they are the same colour as the parcel tray trim.

**And getting better results from 6" in the parcel tray than 6x9s????** I dont think so mate. 6" splits WILL NOT give you the lower frequency of what a top quality 6x9 can, but they are much CLEARER as they are designed to be a staging (directional) component system. The only other way of getting a 6" Component set to sound louder would be to get a 3-way component system, which has the driver, mid and tweeter as separate units.

I've got a pair of 6.5" Clarion 3-way speakers in the back, and they are brilliant. I'm not running an amp so they are running straight off the head unit, but they cope quite well. They are 180W, so they're not the most powerful speakers out there, but they are still really good. I can get plenty of base from them, despite a lack of sub, and they are very clear. And they were easy to fit. They just bolted into the original holes.

Here's a picture of what they look like. They are the Clarion SRR1634.

As others have said, cutting the parcel shelf is illegal. No point arguing about it with some punk 16yo at Autobarn who doesn't even own a car, ring the RTA in your state.

As for the 6x9's, they were cool in 1984, but there are better things out there these days. I know it'll cost more, but running a 8" sub with a small amp and a pair of 6" will make a million times more bass than a pair of 6x9's.

Are you sure it's the parcel shelf vibrating? It's just a piece of carboard with carpet on it. It may be the standard speakers being loose, or the grilles coming off.

yeah cutting the metal is illegal in all states.. The metal sheet is a structual component on ur car.. so any modification to it is deminishing the structual integraty of the vehicle

but like everyone has said.. go 6" but add a sub... much better sound out of the 6: anyway

These speaker are rear fill only, are are not to be over powered like the fronts. Also 6x9's need good power to work well and if connected to the HU will draw enough to distort.

im pretty sure this has been covered, u CAN cut into the parcel shelf, u cant cut into any major beams etc eg A pillars and the floor etc

The parcel shelf is pretty major, that's why the seat belts are anchored to it.

well thats just how they were when i got the car, i just replaced the old speakers with newer ones.

Oh well, So after ringing a couple of places. Getting some prices, etc.

I've decided against running 2x 6*9s in the back.

So I've decided to take the 2x 6in" Pioneers I had in the front (Attached)

Which I think give much better sound, and plus they look much better in the back. I'm glad I didn't go ahead and get holes cut.
