Hi Guys,
I was driving today(about a half hour drive) in my EL Fairmont when suddenly the Cruise switched off, I looked down at the Speedo to see that it had Zero'd out. I noticed the engine was reving a bit hard, as a check i pull the shifter back into thrid, sure enough no change in engine RPM. I had lost 4td gear, the car had jumped back to third and wouldn't shift up into 4th again. In about a minute it had all come back only to drop out again in another few minutes. After getting to my destination and letting the car sit, I drove home. Not a a problem all the way home. Does any one have any ideas? I was thinking it could just be a speedo sender unit getting ready to die, but I can't explain why 4th disapeared. Can anyone shed some light on the situation? Regards, MontEL |

possibly the trans went into limp home mode due to having no speedo input (had no idea what it was doing)
if the transmission goes into limp home mode, it stays in 3rd gear.

Yes if the the speedo transducer (speed sensor), isn't working then it will go into limp mode and get stuck in third. I assume that would stop the cruise from working aswell. My AU did the same thing though, my transducer died totally.
Cheers, Adrian.

Agree with everyone else, limp home mode for sure. Think your speed sender unit needs replacing.

Spped sensor or was a recall in EF/early EL 6 for a harness connector problem with wiring going O/C from heat of exhaust.

Thanks all for the responses.
I imagine if I get a new speed sensor fitted, it would be the updated part? and it should all be good? |

The problem could be in the wiring harness??? I recently spoke to a very experienced auto electrician and he said alot of the ford wiring looms aren't rated for the current they are carrying. Seen it on brake lights where the wire burns out or becomes high resistance. Also try spraying the connectors on the gearbox with a bit of contact cleaner.
Cheers Luke..
