Default DIY service

Hi all, It's time I need to service my engine and instead of paying $500 to get the 1st year apprentice at ford to do it I thought I'd like to learn more about what's what in my new car. So I've decided to do all the fluids and everything I can do by myself. So here come the questions.

What can and should I change in my car, It's done 75000 K's and so far I'm thinking I'll change oil/air filter, Oil, brake fluid, clutch fluid, diff fluid and I think thats all I know. I have a freind who's agreed to do all the technical
stuff like timing ect. So is there anything else I can check or change by myself and what brand would you buys recomend for the fluids and all that. Is it worth getting a K&N filter?

Sorry for that overload of Questions but I'm still trying to learn about cars.

Aftermarket airfilters are great ive had all 3 brands K&n-redline-kingdragon and they do all the same thing just huge differance in pricing as for the timing wont be needed if the car is running smooth.

And as for servicing at ford been there done that tools kept breaking bits on car : and dont always go for the expensive brand of oils as i reckon they all do the same thing lastly check youre spark plugs and ignition leads but i dont think with the minumal amount of kays you have that you need to change all the fluids though.

i aint a mechanic but i do most of my repairs myself as workshops are like the goverment love ripping you off.

replace
Oil
Oil filter
paper air filter, put your vacuum cleaner in your air box and clean out any bugs etc
spark plugs
plug leads (if necessary)
reseting your ECU when servicing can also help engine smoothness and performance
also a good idea to check and replace your coolant if needed

save $$$ doing it yourself ,plus its not that hard and quite enjoyable working on your own car i think.

cheers gary

My diff has been getting a fair bit of work latley which is why I want to change that. So do you think I should put off the clutch and brake fluid till 100 000 K's. How do I reset my ECU?

About the only timing and tuning you can do to an AU without an edit or chip is to reset the ECU.

Oh ok well then all I need to take it to him now for is the slight ticking noise. I hope this takes away the start up problem I have some times.

Pretty sure AU's dont have a hydraulic clutch so no clutch fluid needed.

Ok I've changed the oil oil filter put in the K&N air filter and some bosch spark plugs. I just wish I shopped around for good spark plugs as I wasn't thinking when I bought them. Now could anyone tell me how to reset the E.C.U?

have a check of your cooling system hoses, any signs of leakage , and check battery and terminals as well.

I bung a bottle of injector cleaner in the fuel tank every service and change the fuel filter every two years.

bets thing to do if you want to do your own service, and this is what us mechanics tend to do, is get the owners manual out of the glove box, turn to the service schedual book and look up the service that is recommended for the amount of kms you have done. it has a little check list on it that ford recommend needs doing at each interval. then look for other things while doing that service that may require attention, check all over for leaks (brake cylinders, axel seals, cv boots, diff seal, trans seals, rocker cover, power steer pump, head gasket, etcetc, and not just oil but coolant as well) check that your brake pads still have a bit of meat on them and that tyhe rotors are wearing evenly (no grooves, and check for lip depth - rotors may need machining) as well. hope this helps
