Hi I'm new here & have just bought my first e-series, an ED falcon. The car is in decent condition but has this annoying problem. occassionally on idle it is a tad rough and when I turn the air-con on, it seems to idle excessively high. I haven't got a tacho coz it's a GLi, but my guess is about 1500rpm. I prefer to do all my tuning and servicing myself, but could it be a faulty ecu? Btw, its my first fuel injected, ecu car! I'm use to Holleys & a timing light!

Revs should increase to stop stalling when aircon is activated, you got a manual or auto?
Revs should also increase when steering is taken full lock for the same reason. Idle is a tad rough, could be anything, start with the simple things new leads and plugs then go from there. You can put the engine into diag mode and set/check the base idle timing with a timing light if really needed.

Thanks, I replaced all plugs, leads, airfilter, etc, but still had the problem. The box is an auto. That was gonna be my next question... while giving it a good cleainside, I removed the shifter cover & notice the E/P switch is not hooked up. Theres no wiring for it or the trans shifter light. Were these just options being it was a base model?

Nope, remove the centre console you will find the wires around there somewhere, some twit never connected em back at some stage by the sounds of it.
the other thing could be dizzy cap, and rotor, my basic philosiphy is this: If it dont stall, dont worry to much

Cheers Dellboy, I'll attack the console after work today & try to find the wires. I'll try not to worry about the idle, hell, it's better that my old 351 XW used to idle :evil_laug

Should have the E/P switch and T Bar light from GLi all the way to LTD..
either the console was removed and the wires are tucked underneath due to not being reconnected...as dellboy999 said or (i doubt) it was originally a manual car converted to Auto. Extreme

Umm... it has to have a t-bar light, it's one (of many) condition of a valid rwc. You have to have an illuminated gear position indicator when the park lights are on.
The wires are usually routed to the right of the stereo, almost directly under the handbrake. Pulling out the console is easy, prise up the t-bar surround, two screws at the front. There are two more in the console bin, and one on either side at the rear. Undo all them and just pull it backwards. BTW, congrats on the purchase and welcome to the forum. |

Thanks to everyone who replied & for the welcomes!
I pulled out the console last night, and sure enough, there the wires were. Obviously someone was a bit lazy at some stage. It sure is nice to have illuminated position markers now. :eclipsee_

How are you going. It may be possible that you have a dirty throttle body and Idle speed control motor.Using mineral turps not carbie cleaner, clean the inside of the throttle body remove the ISC and split it in 2 (undoing the 2 philp head screws) clean the inside shaft on the motor side and allow to dry.refit all conponents with the idle speed control motor disconnected and engine running set idle till it just runs around 400rpm,reconnet and it should idle up to around 650 mark.Disconnet battery and to kill ECU memory.reconnect after about 5min.Start and run the car through every gear at idle 10 sec in every gear,a/c on off and power steering left or right. Now drive for about 15 k very speeds and loads and you should have the idle learnt and hopefully it should be all ok.Hope this helps
