Default Another (yes another) EA problemo

Hey all,

Yes again there is a EA issue (SHould have a separate "MY SCREWY EA PROBS" section for us ea ownerd ;) lol)

Ive noticed over the last 4 days that in the morning when i go to start my EA, it coughs, splutters idles VERY ROUGH and stinks of fuel, I have to hold the revs @ 2000rpm for about 10sec or so for it to clear itself out or it simply goes to stall... any thoughts? Ive also noticed that the average has gone up to 17.0 from 14.2 :yeees: Nothing has been changed or swapped over on the motor.

Check all of the obvious things
- spark plugs / leads
- did the problem start just after you refueled (dodgy batch of fuel)
- any hoses come off under the bonnet

Sounds pretty tricky, but things like this usually end up being a simple little fault.

It's gotta be some fuel issue, especially if you can smell it and your consumption is up.

Bloody EA's hey... just as I try to fix one thing on ours, another two things go wrong. The thing is, now the "problems" list is overtaking the "non-problems" list :(

I'm moving to Melbourne :nutsycuck

And it runs ok after your initial start up? It'll be your TPS, no question - mines doing the exact same thing, I just haven't got around to fixing it.
Hot tip from my ex ford mechanic mate - elongate the holes for the screws, and twist the tps around a bit until it stops doing it. Problem being that the car is thinking the throttle is open more than it is and therefore throwing in excess fuel.

My TPS must be knackered too then, any idea how much one costs? Or should I just get one from the wreckers?

I think you can use even an AU one if you want. That's what I'd do.

you'd need the dual type mick. the el will be a single one. your saying the auto playing up too would be weird if both your tps are bung one for eec one for tranny.

You can run just a single TPS if you want, tap the wires together, I have a single TPS in my conversion to 4 speed auto, and am having no problems.

you will find your injectors are leaking overnight and it is getting huge amounts of fuel on the valves and in the cylinders.

Heres the update...

I took the Throttle body off, cleaned it out, put another TPS on and checked the ISC. Put it all back on, and its still doing it. When you go to start it, its rough as guts, like its missing, then clears itself after you rev it a couple of times.

The other interesting thing is I switched the Trip Computer to INSTANT FUEL USAGE
and when i take off normally to 60kph, and doing around 2000rpm, the instant shows 99??? None of my mates cars do this, nor does my mums EA ghia.
This sounds like my injectors are flogged right?

BTW curtis, sounds about right

so your running an ea computer and only 1 tps mick? have you done what jase has done?

ps your trip computer won't show the fuel going in if your injectors are stuffed. it will only show what the computer is thinking it is injecting. if its showing 99 somethings not right. usually they will show 99 if your at wide open throttle at that speed. you could get it to show 99 at 2000rpm but you'd need to have an iron foot™

Injectors would be the G-O. I was thinking exactly what Curtis posted.

Did it fix your fuel consumption reading on your trip computer?

Hi, my TC shows the dreaded 99 but everything else is normal. Fuel consumption is high but the car runs well. Why the 99? cheers Chris.

Don't do that yet! I have been having the same problems as you and i have found that i had a faulty ecu relay. I would check that out first before you do any thing else. cheers _2:

Yeah mate, check the fuel pump relay and the ecu relay underneath the coolant tank behind the battery. Look directly under the 4 relays. Headlamps, starter etc. Fuel pump is green cover and the ECU is the other one. Check for corrosion on the plugs.

Cheers Luke.

Who this is a old thread...

The problem turned out to be dodgy injectors as one of them were leaking. But my Fuel relay was screwy aswell.

My only issue now is its still like 16.5 average?? The only thing i havent changed is O2 sensor and spark plugs
