If it blows all the time even after driving for a while its possibly a head gasket or water leaking into inlet manifold.Or if it is only when you start it ,it is probably condensation form catalytic converter

Could also be valve stem seals if it only does it on startup.

if it's continually blowing smoke even after start up I would say you might have 1 or more worn piston rings.

If it came from a shed looking like this the engine should be alright.
Seriously though, was the engine from another EA? might not have been in much better condition that yours was but if it's running i suppose thats a start.
How long have you had the engine in your car? And how much have you ran it in since it was installed?

The key is the fact that the smoke is white. This means it's actually steam, caused by water getting into the exhaust. Like has been said earlier, if it only does it on startup, it's just condensation in the exhaust and is perfectly normal.

If it does it all the time, then it will be something more serious. :(

Cheers,
Dave

P.S. Jaded6 LMAO at that pic!

Should come good i think.
As already mentioned the white smoke is basically steam.
Could have got some condensation build up through the exhaust system @ engine swap.

did you change the stale oil out of it when you put the motor in? i'd bloody well hope so.......

woulda broken down sitting for so long, so it woulda been superly thin....... probably was going past the piston rings and into combustion chamber, being burnt, hmm smoke.

i reckon the sump would have all sorts of gunk on the bottom too.......

Cool

My car blew a fair bit of white smoke after it had been idling, eg. waiting at the lights etc. I knew it was oil as you could smell it, especially when driving with the window down.
There was an exhaust leak between the split exhuast manifold, so when I removed it to replace the olive I stuck a torch in the exhuast ports and could see oil leaking down the valve stems, this just confirmed what i had been thinking, so I got genuine valve stem seals and replaced them. The smoke stopped! and the engine stopped using oil, strange that lol.

Brent.

A bit of happy rattle is OK... just sit next to any V6 commy at the lights- you won't be able to hear your lifters over the commy's valvetrain!

If you replace the lifters, only use genuine ones- the non-gen ones are shithouse quality in my experience. Seem to bleed down really easily.

can you repair lifters somehow or do you have to replace them? would it be worth tracking down some low km ef rocker gear.. or better to just put in brand new lifters?

its not just a little bit of lifter noise its really bad... TICK TICK TICK really loud.

au bottom end, and a replacement head (will be re-coed) going on soon... so not too worried about the smoke but i think i'll be re-using the rocker gear.

The parts that wear out are the hydraulic lifters that sit between the rockers and the valve stem. They're supposed to stay pressurised and keep the clearance between the rocker and stem to a minimum. When they wear out and/or lose pressure they open up and you get the ticking sound- which is the sound of the rocker hitting against the valve stem.

Most OHC Ford 6's will have some amount of lifter noise, particularly when cold. If it keeps going once it warms up it could mean worn out lifters or an oil pressure problem. Though it also happens if you give it alot of revs for an extended period or have low oil level (it's happened to me doing burnouts before- scared the crap out of me at the time).

mine used to just do it when starting up just for a couple seconds then fine once oil circulated. since yesterday it just hasnt stopped ticking... i'm guessing it could be a combination of worn out lifters and an oil pressure problem... my oil pressure has gotten worse as well i think.. its sitting lower than it used to.. and drops right down when i come to a stop. i'll check the oil level tonight because it very possibly could of burnt a fair bit of oil..

I checked my oil level and it was sitting just below the A in the word ADD on the dipstick. i.e. very very low. and i just did an oil change 10 days ago! so its getting pretty bad. I had thicker oil in there, but put thinner oil back in this time just to try it out, so obviously thicker oil is going back in there. I topped it up and now its not ticking like crazy! lol.

Hopefully it stays in one piece until my new engine is ready.
