Default EL XR6 diff...

My EL XR6 clunks like buggery...almost every gear change, unless I am VERY smooth and slow with the clutch....the clunk feels and sounds like its coming from the diff.
Is there anything I can check for?
I am thinking I will pull the cover plate off the diff and see if there are any metal chunks or chipped gears or anything obvious...there doesnt seem to be much play in the driveshaft, maybe a few mil...

Also, tonight I noticed that idling in nuetral, there is a rattling sound coming from the gearbox....when I press the clutch the rattling stops...what could that be?

My brother's car was doing exactly the same thing. He changed the fluid in the box and it seemed to disappear.

Hmm...I only changed the tranny and diff fluid about 3 or 4 months ago.
I used synthetic Auto tranny fluid, as specified by Ford, this made the gear changes MUCH easier and smoother. That should be ok shouldnt it..car has done 138,000 kms.
Also in the diff I used that Castrol LSX90 or whatever it is, the synthetic stuff for LSD diffs.

hm.. MY t5 rattles at idle then when the clutch is in its quiet.. Its def somthing inside the box.... but what it is im not sure

first things first, check all the bushes on your rear trailing arms...

this is the cause of many clunks from the rear axle

The rattling will be the thrust bearing.

mmm the clunking from the rear end... check your tyre pressures

the rattle in my t5 isnt the thrust bearing.. you can rest load on the bearing and it doesnt change untill u totally disengage drive to the gear box and doesnt change with the amount of load on it . which means the rattle is internal in the t5... Not saying it wont be the trush bearing just that there is chance it is internal in the gear box

preload on the diff needs adjustment by the sounds of it

throwout/thrust bearings stuffed put up with it cause they are $80+ brandnew just wait till clutch dies and replace it

A thrust bearing is most noisy when LOAD is applied, he is sayting that its noisy when the clutch isnt enguaged, meaning no load on the bearing...
Back the cable right of and move the clutch fork right back, so that the bearing isnt in contac at all with the pressure plate, if the noise is there its not the thrust bearing bearing, if it goes it is the thrust bearing.

See when u are pressing the clutch in not only are u adding load to the thrust bearing but you are also stoping all movement inside the gear box.. So any bearing inside the box thats nosy or any selector fork thats rattling will go quite at the same time...

All im saying is that nothing is 100 percent certain.. and to just say its the thrust bearing is kinda jumping to conclusions.. Hey it might be, the bearing fixed youre car, but it didnt fix mine.... There is more than a thust bearing to cause noise..

No way its thrust bearing.

If the noise is in neutral at idle clutch NOT Depressed then its the gearbox layshaft bearings. This is the secondary shaft that is spinning. Hard acceleration forces the main and layshaft apart and the bearings wear and the slack created makes the noise when it can wobble a bit under no load.

What sound does the car make in first driven to say 3000rpm slowly and then let it decellerate? If you can play a tune with the gearbox its the bearings and a full rebuild is required.

A couple of my T5's have rattled too, it wasn't the thrust bearing on either.

The diff clunk may have worn cones, hence the spider gears have too much clearance.
Or it may simply have too much backlash.

Check your tyre pressures dude. My diff clunked on gear changes. The rear tyres were on 18psi :( Filled em up and the clunk went away
