Ive owned my AU2 less than a week and the auto is fine.

Tell me something though (this question is for anyone), does you gearbox have a slight whine to it in first gear only? Is that normal? My mates EF has the same sort of slight whine noise to it in first only and his box is in good order also. I just want to know if its a normal thing to expect.

Every E-series or AU taxi I've been in has had the first gear wind-up whine. Come to think of it I'm pretty sure the X-series cars had it too. It's there but not as loud in both my AU wagons. I think it just comes with the turf.

AU whine goes with the cheese of being an owner. lol
Some cars whine more than others. Dunno why. Also chamelion, you had your radio off, windows up and sat in the back of your car lately? no whine? not a falcon then.
I love my whine. I wish it was louder. In fact i wish it was supercharger whine :(

lol. yeah a SC whine you could get used to real quick.

I guess what I'll do is get it fully serviced with good fluid and see if it will improve it. Other wise I'll just have to turn the radio up to ignore it.

Regarding dipsticks, were e series dipsticks used and a hole drilled or is there another dipstick available specifically for the AU

I spent 3½ years working for a taxi management company, and i saw ALOT of cabs. ELs, AUs, BAs. No BTR Auto ever got past about 460-470k, even with the gentlest of drivers. Usual was just shy of 400k. We serviced our cars every 28 days, and transmission every second service. We had dipsticks put on all of them (just cos they're not factory doesn't mean you can't get em, i've got one on mine) so we could check the levels, and they were checked about 4 or 5 times a week. I don't have a terrible amount of experience with the BA boxes (from what i hear they're no better than the AU boxes) and in all the cabs I've seen I've never heard of one passing about the 470k mark.

Yeah i'm pretty sure they're just E-series dipsticks. I think they use the filler hole? But i can't quite remember.

I guess it's a commodore desperately trying to be a falcon then?

Smile AU auto boxes

Hi mine died at 230 Ks because the radiator itself died and let green into the box when hot and red into the radiator when cold as the bands are held together with water based glue the trannie died what I did was replace the radiator $100 new in a box from the wreckers a new header tank $100 from Ford and an ED trans $100 from a wrecked car and had a transmission shop change the valve body, service and fit the ED trans which cost me $300 now I have an AU with a perfect trans and also a dipstick so I can check the fluid level

vctxr6ute, i have an apology to make. Spoke to a mate of mine who is an ex ford mechanic and he tells a story of a cab that made it to the million without a head or box change. Apparently this cab was pretty much just a glorified limo, doing ****y highway runs by an owner-driver. Seems owner-driving makes a fair difference to how long your box lasts in taxiland.

Servicing is important... so is how you drive it. Your avatar speaks volumes LOL. BTW not criticising you, how you drive is your choice.

sly is right, servicing is important, but a standard BTR is never going to survive long in a 14-sec car.
