Hey, i got a new dizzy put it my I6 and after puttin it in the car is running like sh*t, it has no power at all and coughs abit when you put your foot down and isnt the greatest to start. I sent it back to the auto elec i got it done from and he couldnt get it running good again. He has told me that the timing isnt set right and that he cant set it properly coz he rekons the harmonic balancer has moved out and what hes lining the timing up with is givin a wrong reading but it was runing alot better before the new dizzy was put it, i changed the dizzy coz the modual was screwing up and it was cheaper to buy the whole dizzy than just buy a new modual. I dont know a whole lot about this stuff so can anyone help me? i have tryed searchin the forums on here but nothin came up that sounds like what is hapening to me.

Yup, sounds like the balancer has slipped, it'll be a ***** to line up.
Your best bet is to find TDC, then mark the balancer and redo the timing to that mark. |

or just keep advancing the timing slightly till it pings then back it off
i could tell you the way to advance the timing but unless your good with working on cars then it can be a tricky procedure, it would prob be best to get your mechanic to do it. |

I didn't think balancers could slip. Wouldn't they have a key on them like the cam gear to stop that from happening?

Im not sure but i took to a good mechanic and the harmonic balancer hasnt moved at all, the guy didnt have the timing right and it took the other mechanic 5 mins to fix. Thanks for all the help

Thought as much. timing is pretty hard to set on these engines if your replacing the dizzy, it's easy to get it a tooth out. A lot of the time you'll find that you set the base timing perfectly according to the Ford manual and it's nowhere near being right. You have to advance it a heap before the thing will actually fire up.

The balancer is made of 2 or 3 rings bound to each other and they can slip on eachother.
