ok i am wondering if a 2200-2500rpm stall converter for my AU XR8 is what i am after. I just find this car has always been a slouch off the line, and i mentioned it last time when i got the auto serviced, and he said maybe a higher stall will make it feel a little more lively.
For now the car is basically stock, just a full exhaust sys and CAI done, with future plans of alloy heads & cam. Any input would be appreciated......

Diff gears 0r a tune will help with standing start take 0ff's.

thanks for the info there guys, with diff gears i do a few hwy km's each day to and from work, i presume if i was to get 3.73:1 gears it would prob rev at about 2200+rpm @ 100kph ??
not too concerned with economy really, but i wouldnt think it would increase a great deal?

yeah i have 3.9's in mine and when it was auto it would sit at about 22-2300 at 100 but ur speedo will be out about 15-20km mine was out 20 now that its manual its out by 15 as i have the 3.45 cog on the speedo drive.
i dont think there is really any fix for this except a jaycar speedo corrector which can play havoc with ur cruise control. but yeah i have a 3000rpm stall and the 3.9's and i wouldnt have changed (except a smaller stally maybe 25-2800 as mine used to go to about 3500 and sometimes even 4000) it but then i wanted manual. cheers josh.

I was told that the AU gets its speed from the ABS sensor so changing diffs doesn't affect it like in the past. Is that right?

be careful with high stalls only takes a little bit and it turns from a good launch to smoke and a squeal which these days is an offence which can have your car impounded.

Anyone know what sort of coin we would be looking at to get 3.9 gears fitted in an IRS diff?

Go the gears.
Unless you plan on raising your powerband, raising your stall speed is a waste of the Windsor's natural low down grunt. If you bolted a set of AFR's, a nice Comp cam and CAI/Exhaust on the other hand..... : Daniel |

Yep i'd definately just go with diff gears (3.9:1) for now.
Once/if you get the heads and cam etc done, then you may want to get a stall to suit.

And XR8Fella, one bit of advice, ignore everyone here. Go all out and get a set of 4.11's, I got a set of 3.9's around a year ago and as soon as I had driven it decided I'd swap them over for 4.11's.

If you have a flash tune box you can get your local tuner to recalibrate your speedo
apparently. |

So once you get a diff gear change how do you recalibrate the speedo?
I personally have been using navman and planned to get this corrected with a tune.

My diff gears are getting replaced next week with some 3.9's and got a tentative quote for $1350. That includes a rebuilt LSD, but knowing my luck of late, the engine will probably detonate as gets driven on the hoist...
Anyway... All the tuners I have spoken to tell me the speedo can be corrected with a tune. They were also talking about that in relation to the new XCAL equipment, so maybe the software is different??

Nope, doesn't work unfortunetly. Speedo is driven directly from the electronic speedo driver or whaterver you like to call it, then the signal is passed onto the ecu. The only way to correct it is with a speedo corrector (jaycar item). Then the signal onforwarded to the ecu needs to be corrected either with another of these jaycar items (bringing the signal back to the same level) or with an edit.

Seems strange that the edits cant calibrate the speedo, I have an old chiptorque HP5C chip that allowed by speedo to be corrected when I put in the 3.7's!
I cant believe the edit cant incorporate something the jaycar speedo corrector does in a small kit???
