Texting/driving

This hasn't worked out properly, maybe someone can fix a direct link, but I think if you click on the picture it takes you to a photbucket account and should just play.
The clip may have already done the rounds, I have only just seen it and I think it is very sobering. Emphasises what the emergency service workers probably don't get enough thanks for everyday (thanks god it's not me that has to do this job)

This sort of thing should be shown as part of getting your license.

I dont have a mobile phone and havent done for nearly 10 years - the world worked fine before them.

Every day when im on the road, i see people looking down at their lap texting, some even sitting at green traffic lights not realising they arent red anymore.

I have zero sympathy for anyone that uses a phone while they are driving.
AFAIC, drink driving laws should apply to anyone that has been caught - driving whilst texting is no different than driving while over .05.
If you do cause a crash whilst on the phone, then it should be jail time straight up - no B.S excuses.

Exactly, graphic in your face clips should be shown when getting your drivers licence, and jail time if you text too, its just blatant stupidity.

I dont understand what can be so urgent and important that you need to text while driving. If its that important..try pulling over and ringing?

Guilty as charged. I occasionally text and drive...I know it's not the safest act. I don't do it where there is heaps of traffic though...'Helps' that I can text without looking at my phone.

Is the ad shocking? Yes.
Will ads like this stop it or help? Probably not, no.

After a crash, Police should check the phone of the driver to see if they were on it!

I dont like to txt while driving but occaisionally do when i get on a straight with minimal traffic. But I think after watching that il just wait til I get to where im going before i txt.. or just use my hand free kit and call the buggers.

I am not responding to you negatively or aggressivley, xr6_661, but 1) you are right, it's not the safest act, in fact I am hard pressed to think of too many other acts whilst driving that are any unsafer. 2)wether it's done regardless of the amount of traffic involved, that doesn't change 1).
3) I don't believe it's an ad for anything, but given how shocking it is I am sure if it were shown in conjunction with others of its sort and in the context of a total educational driving course, I for one think it may help

Tried it a couple of years ago, decided it was too bloody dangerous, so I pulled over and completed the text on the side of the road. I don't know how or why anybody would do it. I find it difficult enough to text whilst walking in public, I know it's probably not that hard for most tech-minded people, but at least I know my limitations. I would rather do one thing properly at a time, as opposed to the many multitaskers around who think that doing several things ********-poor at the same time is actually saving them time.

Yep, too difficult. I tried it once and nearly ended up the back end of a parked car on the side of the road.
That was a big enough scare to stop me ever doing it again! It's just plain stupid...
When behind the wheel, I just concentrate on driving now!!!

I admit on my old "candybar" style nokia phone i was bad for driving and texting.

I didn't have to look at the phone to write messages, so i guess that was my excuse.

However, with a touch screen blackberry, there is no way i text and drive.

Yep, I used to also have one of these back on when I was on my P plates and could write several words at a time without needing to look at the screen, quick glimpse to see its ok then write another several words while still looking at the road. Now own a touchscreen samsung and yea, no feel of any keys makes it a whole lot harder to keep your eyes on the road :togo: .

I try to avoid it where ever possible, I was caught talking on a mobile phone, losing 3 points and my license. I then went out and bought a jasjam (at the time new) as i knew i couldn't text while driving. In recent years I have gone for the FG XR for its tech pack, Bluetooth is now a MUST for me, as is having the phone in the centre console with message tone on silent, If someone wants to ring, I can answer via the bluetooth, If someone messages, I'll answer when i get home.

i wasnt a fan of my mate to texting and driving. im left handed so i could always get a good swing at him. soon learnt to pass me the phone. another one didnt like when i jerked slightly at the wheel towards the table drains, then recentred the car. probably not the safest but id rather be responsible for my own death, and not leave it up to someone else to have a go.

Yeah, there's apparently a whole half hour film thing that its all part of, I wouldn't mind seeing the whole thing but dunno if the whole thing is available.

That's half the issue there...how can people who would be swayed by the kind of stuff be made aware if it's not widely available?

I'm kind of hoping that any one who sees this (and indeed all the other similar such items that get posted) will use them in the most advantageous way.My kids have seen it and passed it on, I am sure we have teachers on the forum who may/would be able to have it circulated in the most appropriate way.
Again , I think it's just another positive way we can use this and other forums. Every body may have differing opinions, but on a lot of topics there is really only a simple answer,.. lets get the messages out there.

Problem here is this can happen from anything, not just texting. Its good they use this as an example so many text/drivers can get the message the video is sending. However I could be lighting a smoke and this could happen, unwrapping a sandwhich, opening the glovebox to grab that air freshener, having a sip of coffee etc etc. I guess my point is if you do anything while driving (not talking about shaving or applying make up here) don't ever forget the road - keep your eyes glued and never off it for more than a split second
