quick tranny question

Hi everyone..
I need some advice on buying a 2000 Au 1 falcon ute...its the 4 speed V8 (not the xr8)...its done just on 213,000km and when i took it for a test drive .... everything was fine i did push it a bit on the freeway ect...but when returning up a slight encline all of a sudden it reved upto 4500 and wasnt going anywhere (like freewheeling) ...so i stopped turned it off then back on and when to go and the same thing happened reved to 4000+ but didnt move.. in the end i had to drive it back in 3rd (which had no problems) the guys mechanic said it was just low fluid..but the seller said it was full when i took it....Could you guys pleasse tell me what you think...could it just be low fluid or will it need a new gearbox?

any info would be awsome....

AU transmissions are sealed units...ie no dipstick....how would the seller know it's full (unless it's been recently serviced - which would mean it wasn't done very well).

Sounds like low fluid - just needs a top up and all should be well.

Yeah, be cautious - a freewheeling auto in my experience is often a sign it won't last long.

If you buy it allow for a tranny rebuild unless you get it properly checked by a tranny specialist first it is getting up to the Ks where a rebuild is on the cards

What's the best/easiest (do-it-yourself) way to top up an AU auto trans?

undo the fill plug (on front of trans, drivers side)
fill until full with 95LE style fluid
redo fill plug

I bought a "tom thumb" hand pump to pump fluid in.

Id look at the next car for sale.. Seriously, if it cant even do a test drive, its no good.

I agree with au3xr6. If everything else is in good order and you really like the car, the stuffed auto is not really a problem and can be used as a bargaining tool. Get a quote on exchange auto, then you can say its going to cost me $1500 for a new auto, I'll give you $3000 (or whatever) for the car.

i`ll probably get laughed off the forums, i have a 2 metre long bit of clear hose that i push into the fill hole , with a funnel taped onto the hose i then tape it to the drivers mirror,i just fill the funnel and let it gravity feed in, i can still open the door .

Thanks very much to everyone that contributed...in the end the seller took it to a tranny specialist and they told em it was compleatly shot...so he paid for a new one then and there..

I am now the proud owner of an 2000 Au falcon ute......

great outcome I't a shame you didn't post this before they did it you can pay an extra $60 while the tranny is out for them to fit a dipstick ( a lot of cabs have this done)

............with a new auto under warranty! The auto is often the biggest worry and expense.
