Default Turbo diesel AU ?

Hey Hey,

I'm sick of paying $100 to fill my AU series 2 with 95 - 98 ron unleaded and getting 450 - 550km from a tank.

I was thinking of engine conversions and the idea of a common rail turbo diesel motor was mentioned by a mate. He has fitted a 5L hilux motor to an ED falcon a few years back and the owner ran it on cooking oil. It was quite a bit of stuffing around but he was getting very good economy but was slow, very slow. So why not a ranger common rail motor, The 3.0 116kw 380nm jigger. They have a bit of go in a large/heavy car. An AU falcon is lighter and more stream line so economy should be pretty dam good.

I don't like the ranger 5 speed auto so i guess a 5 speed manual from a 4x2 would work. Diff gearing would need a change too. The whole conversion from pulling the I6 out to driving it with a diesel would be rather costly, I would say 10k easy but an its an idea.

Thoughts ?

Des.

Motor, box and all the bits would be expensive but mounts would be simple enough. It would still blow out over 10k.

Personally, I think it just wouldn't be cost effective (re post 2).

You have a number of choices. Buy something else that is cheaper to run, buy a bike, walk, bum a lift, car pool. Just a few suggestions.

diesel conversions were popular back home because diesel is significantly cheaper than petrol, here its just not worth the grief.

Bump up the compression and LPG mate, much easier and good power.

$4500 for sprintgas vapour injection, I'm seriously thinking about the gas but was just thinking out loud about the diesel idea.

Vapour or liquid would be the way to go imo; don't forget diesel will need to be emissions passed and that ain't cheap!
If you really want to drop 10k on the motor, open it up and go high compression, hypereteutic flat-top pistons, etc. and pay a lot of attention to valve seats and port work aimed at torque. Get a good cam and you'll have a real mover that's still cheaper than petrol

it would be interesting to try in any event, i wonder how much one of these new territory diesels cost, in a 300 or 400 kg lighter car, it would be a bit of alright i reckon, throw in the 6 speed box......yeah baby .

LPG it instead. Diesel isn't worth the ****ache. I don't see the benefits of diesel unless you do alot of highway running.

No, just too thirsty. I like au's but cant justify $105 for 450km to 550km.It's either getting gas injection or its getting sold.

The diseasel idea was just an idea. Think about though, A PJ ranger is pretty quick for a large 4x4 so that motor in a Au would be quicker again. I reckon on par with a 4.0 six but better economy and a smaller motor.

The 3.0 litre ranger motor doesn't have major issues like navara's and hilux's do. The new ranger motor looks like a transit motor so im very skeptical about their reliability.

Don't forget the engineers certificate and then getting it passed by the RTA (or Qld transport in your case) could be a major headache.

I'm paying 60c p/l for LPG and getting 450+km out of 68l tankin my Fairlane. That works out at less than $10 per 100km at about $40 a tank depending on whether I use a discount docket. Go LPG, it's a no brainer.

Do yourself a huge favour and get an Emer gas injection kit (distributed by forum sponsor Australian LPG Warehouse) installed for under $4000 and claim the $1250 government rebate. You'll recuperate the rest of the outlay in about 30,000km and you won't lose any power or torque.

The 1KD FTE common rail 3.0 hilux motor. I've replaced countless injectors and picked up bits of conrod out of the sump on a few now. I suppose different places see different vehicles fail.

Isn't the 5L motor the older 3.0 diesel from hilux's and hiace's ?
