It's easier to decide when you know the price difference.

Thanx for all the info guys greatly appreciated....price really isnt an issue on this item...as reliability and service life are the main cause for the question...main reason I asked is because with Holden V8 pumps depending on the brand they can be pretty average in the way they cause cavitation behind the inpeller and dont work as efficiently as they should...also service life can be as short as 50-75,000 kms...Ive only ever used aftermarket ones twice and both times they werent quite up to scratch, since then its been genuine all the way...As far as the Ford stuff goes I dont really have that much of a clue, (slowly learning) so from time to time you'll get the odd query from me in bits like this...
Thanks Heaps again... Cheers Kev |

I'd go genuine if the price isn't too $$$$. I've noticed the temp gauge on my ED moves very slowly up and down (only a couple of mm) once I put an aftermarket waterpump on, I know a couple of other people that had the same issue.

If you go aftermarket Get a pump from BURSONS even thow they say Silverline they are made in the same factory as the Powermax and ford replacement pumps
Silverline pump should be around the 50 mark and you will get the bypass " O " ring with it as well |

One thing to ask is if the pump comes with a pully on the shaft. If it doesnt you'll need to get your old pully taken off the pump and pressed onto the new pump. The plastic pulls can chatter when they are removed. Something to think about.

All fitted up thanx again guys ended up getting the powermax one...and yes those pulleys are an absolute bastard to get off....nothing I cant fix with a 9" grinder and a f'n big hammer....since I didnt have a press handy, ( must buy a small one I think) the process involved cutting the whole back end of the water pump in peices with a 9" till i could get to the bearing then punch thru what was left of the shaft...fitted nicely doesnt chatter or do anything silly....not a process I would recommend to anyone but the again neccessity is the mother of invention/creativity and initiative. all is good and the ol man and his fairmont is happy again
Thanx again Kev |

Haha, love the backyard pulley change, I think I'm going to have nightmares about what would have happened if I wasn't able to get mine done... When putting it onto the new pump did you drive (aka hammer) it on, and support the shaft to protect the bearings?

Ha Ha Ha sorry M8 i thought that they would have told you at Bursons
You can get a Powermax pump WITH a pulley on it for 25bux more Sorry m8 i should have told you but i forgot .... every time i order a pump they just send me the pump with pulley .. And yet if you get it from Repco they dont stock them with pulleys yet they just send you a pump with a pulley in another box for you to put on yourself .. AT least you got it going and you did it your self and thats a good start well done and next time make it easyr on yourself and just get a pump with a pulley .... Cheers |

At least you are not usually too concerned about destroying the old pump to get the pulley off! Driving the shaft of the old pump out of the pulley (once "removed" from the pump body) required a sledge hammer
It should be illegal to sell the pumps without a pulley installed lol |

the basic theory to backyard butchery is easy or at least I think so....never stress about breaking stuff unless its the only one you have, with a bit of common sense anything can generally be acheived. I am an ex-mechanic havent been in the trade for years tho...gave it up bout 8 years, deal in steel now its much easier and pays a lot better...
Anyways thanx again for the help and glad I could give you guys a laugh Cheers Kev |
