Default Caltex Adblue. What is it?

Saw it at the servo today, wondering if anybody has used it and what it is exactly designed to do?

it is for modern diesel engines to reduce emissions. it is urea and is added to the cat ( I think that's how it works) all the buses we have received in the last few years all use adblue

It's an additive for diesel vehicles to cut down exhaust emissions.

It's not added to fuel, but in a separate tank, injected into the hot exhaust gases, and run through a catalytic converter, turning the end product into Nitrogen and water.

For diesel engines with SCR systems (selective catalyst reduction), the next fail thing after DPFs to reduce diesel reliability, I mean emissions.

Bandaid solution to the problem.

All Euro 6 emissions diesels will most likely have it, the current Mercedes Sprinters do.

+1
Adblue is typically a liquid urea (32.5%) solution colored blue.

You've got it. Another thing to go wrong and worry about in addittion to the hugely problematic diesel particulate filters.
Best diesel to buy is one without all this emission B.S. i.e. a diesel Territory.
Get in while you can before the rocket scientist boffins have to add even more failing technology to keep the greenies and climate change idiots happy.

Band aid technology , Caterpillar designed the Acert engine that has multiple micro injections under extremely high pressure ( 23,200 P.S.I. ) that only injects the fuel in an ultra ultra ultra fine atomised mist as the flame path expands in the combustion chamber so it efficiently burns it without the need for these bodgy aftertreatment measures .

you don't have a clue do you, no GM diesel require additives.

typically low compression diesels require it, and before someone asks.
low comp diesel are identified by the use of glow plugs.
hi comp diesels don't have them.

Not sure what you would call 'low compression' but my Volvo needs Adblue and has no glow plugs

euro6 yes, euro 5 no.

euro 5 a DPF is only needed with higher comp,
but a low comp requires both..

euro 6 all makes/models require DPF and eurea.
------------------------------------------------

low comp glow plug needed in europe 14:1 ~ 18:1 (16:1 or higher not needed in warmer climates)
hi comp no glow plugs 22:1 ~ 26:1

Hmm not sure what the compression is in our Volvo's but all our ours are Euro 4 and 5.
Euro 6 hasn't arrived in Oz yet.

Default Re: Caltex Adblue. What is it?

It is not directly related to compression, or glow plugs, etc.
Your typical Catalytic convertor for a petrol engine is a “3-way” convertor. Nitrous oxides are reduced to Nitrogen & Oxygen and the oxygen is then used to burn off any unburnt hydrocarbons and convert CO to CO2. Diesel engines typically could not use “3-way” convertors because they run too lean to reduce the NOx (so they would only use “2-way”.) Hence why the Euro standards have been softer on NOx emissions for diesels. However the latest diesels are now fitted with newer type of “3-way” convertor. They inject a urea mixture into the exhaust where it is converted to ammonia which is then used to reduce the NOx into Nitrogen and Water.
It is injected electronically, at about 2% of the diesel consumption rate. “Adblue” is a trademark, maybe it makes the exhaust blue? But it is basically high purity Urea and water.

DPF is for particulates only
urea is for both particulates and NOx

hi comp engines give less particulates. hence DPF only for euro 4/5.

Probably because Mercedes "Blue efficiency" tag, which means don't buy this vehicle.

VW has something as well with the word "blue" in it, referring to SCR systems.
