This is the extension housing on my T5.
 The crack goes around the other side and up as far as this side does. |

Got to be a freak occurance. I had a good look at the T5 I pulled out of my car last time- couldn't find any stress fractures on the casing.
No teeth left on 3rd gears though :( |

that looks like it would be caused by dropping the box on its cross member rather than opperational damage.

one of my mates at uni has had two break like that, but i dont know anyone else who it has happened to.

It has been like that for a fair while. I replaced the speedo sender o ring months ago and topped up the fluid - i didn't notice the crack then but it continued to leak so I assumed i had damaged the seal or something when i put it back in. Reverse slowely went bad over 50,000km first it would occasionally pop out of gear and it got to the point that i could barely reverse out of an angle park because i just couldnt hold it in reverse. When it was reversing it sounded terrible, even worse when it was just rolling and in reverse with no load. Oh well. it did 100k

i agree with walkinshaw. looks like its been dropped or swung into the floor on an engine crane ect.... =\

ok, spoke to him today, he tells me he traced the problem to the little tab that goes on end of 5th gear breaking off and getting jammed, which splits the housing
|
