Default Legal Ride Height

There seems to be a lot of confusion on this subject. So I talked to my uncle who is a mechanic on friday and he rang the NSW RTA to clarify the details.

This ride height only applies to NSW residents, with ANY model falcon and SEDANS only.

FRONT:
Minimum Height From Ground to Top of Lens on Headlight = 600mm
(Optimal Height = 610mm, for Suspension settling & Additional weight)

Minimum Ground Clearance Under Car = 100mm.

REAR:

Minimum Ground Clearance Under Car = 100mm.

So there it is. The word straight from the horses mouth :

Same law here in Victoria , 100mm clearance to the ground from the lowest hanging part on your car ( usually the exhaust ) .

Its no where near 100mm. I dont know why people always say it. Coke can is 127.5 mm if I measured correctly. I think its to short the other way as well.

I think a cigarette packet was closer to the 100mm mark.
Also width of hand across the palm was a rough estimate as well.

How is 27.5mm no where near? It's only an inch out (roughly), so as a guide, it would do. That's all it is (the coke can) - a guide.

I guess you are right. Probably would come in handy at times. :

Hey Guys,

Found some info for SA guys from trasport sa website

http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/pdfs/...ack_suspen.pdf

Suspension height
The ride height of your vehicle may be
lowered, subject to the following conditions
being met:
• the suspension retains at least two thirds
of its original travel
• the distance between any part of the
vehicle and the ground is not less than
100mm.

the PDF also goes states the legal wheel track requirements of aftermarket wheels

I think the old 'can of coke' measurement was around what height the lowest part of the car should of been 'without' any passengers in the car.
That height then 'with' passenger weight usually brought the car down to around the lowest legal limit....Roughly ! .

Cheers.

Not a wives tale, the law used to 6 inches (150mm) About a can height, back in the late 70's early 80's. Not sure what year it changed, but glad it did.
