Ahh im still not convnced. In my opinion, the car's fans should only turn occasionally... not every time the car is driven, or stops at a set of lights.
OED666 its cheaper for me to get one down here :P |

what the?
seriously, your thermos should kick in at about 2/3 or 1/2 temp. in an EF etc, they come on earlier than that, but at lower speed. you should have one fan running at 1/3 temp at least. i wired 1 to the thermoswitch, and one to come on with the AC on the 2 cars i've fitted, never had a problem. i had them both set to come on between 1/4 and 1/3 temp, no later. you dont want it to heat excessively when youre in stop start, you want the thermo to keep it cool and cycle off and on. seems simple enough to me. the car heats up when its still! theres no airflow! thats the point of a thermo! the older clutch fan would be spining at that point, remember. |

Ahh I dunno, mabye im just too used to jap cars now, and their ability to keep things cool. I have re adjusted my thermo fan tonight so that it comes on at 1/2 temp, fans turn on much more often now... yay. |

EF's have the thermos come on full speed at 3/4 guage.
or when aircon is on with fans on high. i'm not sure when the fans come on at low speed, but i imagine a bit earlier, how ever they don't emit that much sound at low speed. my car takes a fair amount of time to get to that 1/2 guage, even in city driving. how ever changes i made to the front of the car in terms of what allowed air to the radiator made huge changes. with the weather as it is now, and normal driving, i don't think my thermos come on at full speed, its only when its copping abuse or the ambient is higher that they come on. don't know how useful this is but i guess the difference between no cooling at all before the thermos switch on is gunna cause different effects to how they come on with EF/EL's.

Bass Crazy, try the thermostat first man (like you said) but I also wouldn't hold much hope for a 5 year old radiator. I don't know if weather condition differences would make any difference to a radiators life span but I wouldn't expect a radiator in my car to be effective for that long. On another note, I say go the 3 row core. Way better for burnouts (at your local track of course). At powercruise this year I only got just over a minute into my skid on the friday night and the temp was already touching the 'L' on the gauge and that was with the fans running the whole time (I have an overide switch on the dash to turn the fans on for that very purpose). suresm58, I'm glad to hear your beast is going well. I hate having cooling system worries. |

FIXED!
Hey guys. Just thought id add a bit of a conclusion. I ended up buying a new radiator today. Picked up a guenine Natrad EL radiator direct for $180. Installed it into the EA, and ta da.... much better. The car is behaving as I expected to. Now the car will cool itself down from 3/4 down to 1/4 in a with about 2 mins of cruising at 60km/h. At 100km/h, the temp wont move off 1/4. Even with the fans set to turn on at 1/2, they only ever turn on if i sit at a set of lights for a fair while. As soon as the car is moving, the temp shoots down. So yeah, very happy now, BRING ON THE HOT DAYS |

Im running the standard AU thermostat. 90 something?
Well I have a bit of a test you can do if you like. On a cool day (say 20deg or less), adjust your thermos so that they come on at 3/4. Get onto a freeway after the car is at operating temp and sit on 100 km/h for a few mins in a lower gear so that the car is revving around the 3000rpm mark. If the temp creeps up to the 1/2 mark, then id say there is an issue. If the radiator is not working properly, it will do this regardless of what thermostat is installed. Previously, my car would creep up to 1/2 or just above doing this, with the new radiator, it sits on 1/4 -1/3, basically dosent move at all. I got caught out by a cooler thermostat and clutch fan hiding my cooling issues last year with the EA engine. Towing another car on a hot day, the EA would just continue to overheat. I guess it depends on what you use the car for. If you are not going to load the car up, then a not so healthy cooling system will probably never cause you any issues as the fans will manage to keep it from overheating. |
