The pregnancy is the easy part, when the kid/kids (my twins are 15 months old) come along then you will feel really cop it. Kids are the most precious thing in your life, they put everything into perspective but they will test and challenge you & your relationship like nothing you could imagine. Be strong & patient.

I disagree.....this is where he becomes a man instead of staying a boy......

if the little tike is a boy, dad will be his world, showing the way, if it's a girl, she will need dad forever.

Dads are VERY important in a kiddies life, most of the problems in todays society is because there are no role models to look up to.

just be prepared to step up to the plate and accept the responsibilities that have now fallen your way, most of all ENJOY the times ahead.

I can tell you what NOT to do...
Dont attend the birth and then run away screaming yelling.
Dont bail the night of the birth saying you are "too tired" to be there.
Don't go to the nearest strip club/brothel after saying you're "too tired"
Don't let the credit card charges show that you were at said club.
Don't get the ***** when you get caught out and run away with her prized muscle car and expect her NOT to hunt you down for the next ten years.
Tru story and I was the one giving birth.
This is why I stick to cars. other than that you will be fine !

Free to good home, please most people already have one, which is more than enough.

And don't worry, this early stage is easy, try the next 15-20 years, this is only the induction.

I should have said no longer relevant 'for the period of the pregnancy'. It is all about the mum at this stage.

How far along are you both?
I say you Both as I believe despite what our fathers and theirs said its a team effort.
We are expecting our first in early April.
Maybe I have been lucky, maybe I have been good, but at nearly 30 weeks my partner is easy and claims its been pretty straight forward so far. We expect birth and the first few months to be the difficult part of course.
Where I seem to be doing well is being part of the team. Show interest in her changing body (not that sort of interest), in all the talk about all that stuff that needs to be decided upon, show and interest in the parenting style talk, even better be interested in all that stuff rather than just show interest.
It would seem, judging by all the advice, all the books, all the families all the personal experience of other people that a consistent approach by both parents is important, get to know one anothers opinions.
I feel she is baring the brunt physically and emotionally at the moment ( probably forever too) She needs support and to feel she isn't alone in the worry and effort

Ooooh too much go the mighty hawks oi oi oi!

Jpblue1000:i am in a very similar situation as you, my first (boy) is due in may, and so far mum is doing great, no morning sickness, no real mood swings, well not directed at me anyway lol,

without tooting my own horn im a good catch, im the sort of bloke that does abit around the house as im efficient lol so she doesnt have much to do other than washing and looking after me ;)

We have been together for 13 years (april)-we are 31, and have known each other for 25 years so get on well and have healthy social lives (together and apart). I know im lucky and do appreciate it, she knows that too, our finances are sorted so now its on with enjoying the little tacker when he gets here.

All the best to the dads to be, and the mums!

Very very important. As dad you're just as relevant as mum is. She'll be depending on you to help her with the whole parenting thing.

Also if the visiting midwife/clinic sisters are mean to your mrs and making her upset (like why aren't you breast feeding, you're doing it wrong etc), tell them to GTFO.

I was curious about that too.

It tastes really sickly sweet, I didn't go back for more - liked the package it came in though.

Cheers!

See that's something I don't agree with. It's true the mum goes through much more physically than we do, but the mental strain on some blokes is huge. For first time parents they both need support, it's not a case of the dad being told to suck it up. How is a bloke with a fried brain going to take care of both a mother and child...?

In a nutshell everything you do or don't do will be wrong and there's nothing you can do about it.
All you can do is give your wife as much support and love as you can.
It will get better.

Tell ya what Damo, I have 15ml of it in a vial next to me. It ain't fully fledged 'milk' yet (that can take up to a week to kick in) but if you had to see what comes out (and what it looks similar to) you ain't gonna want to try it..

If you get my drift?

You are right.. I meant that looking through the pregnancy through the mothers eyes and it looks like I did not say it well enough. It is a partnership with each other supporting one other. I did not mean that it goes on forever. It is a time for her to be the centre of attention and to be spoiled - hence it is all about her. As for my situation, I have been married 45 years this year. Been through two miscarriages (they were very testing times for both of us) and have had two children. I don't think I am unique but there are times when dads take a back seat and do a little bit more to make her comfortable.

Dad's will always take a back seat, most times quite willingly, what the outside world does not see is the "softer" side of Dad.......Dad's are very good at keeping the "soft" side down.

no-one see's the heart ache or tears that Dad hides so well when a miscarriage or some other catastrophe happens, "men don't cry" don't you know.......well I know they do, as my son and daughter in law went through miscarriages twice, they needed Dad and mom to pull through that with sanity intact.

no-one see's Dad giving mum the all important support through the good times and the bad, the sorrow and the joy, the heartache and the pain.

no-one see's dad giving his daughter a knowing hug and a willing shoulder when she has been dumped by some moron who he would dearly love to rip to pieces for breaking his little princesses heart.

no-one see's Dads understanding talks to his son while working on the car or fixing up the house.

but the support and understanding that dad provides for the life of that child/adult is immensely important through good and bad.

Dad's are a sounding board, a mentor, a punching bag, a money tree, a taxi service, soccer coach, footy coach, tennis coach, a door mat at times.......but most of all Dads are a refuge when the world gets a bit rough for all family members.

"back seat" yep! but a very important part of the family unit.

Sorry guys, but I am going against all things said so far. If it is really that bad and you can arrange free postage to Darwin I will take her. I luv pregnant women. The physiological / psychlogical changes in them with hormones running rampant is a great battle.

Good luck and keep me in mind if you change yours.

Cheers Vincenzo

Congratulations yellow, you have single handedly made this contributor a little misty eyed this Australia Day

If you haven't already, pick her up and smell the top of her head, that's the moment something primal and protective will kick in as a father.
My girl is 10 and that feeling never goes away.
