Default Brake lights, cruise control not working

Hey Guys,

Having a problem with my au, for a long time the cruise control has been playing up, it says on the dash cruise active but it isn't. Now today my brake lights aren't working, but the spolier brake light does still work. We've checked the fuse, checked the bulbs. Anyone have any ideas where to go from here before we take it to an auto sparky?

Thanks, Julie.

Replace the bulbs - at $1 each, there cheap enough, and while they may look fine, I'm betting they're not. The blown bulbs will be causing the cruise not to work too (weird, but true).

Have you actually replaced the fuses and globes or just looked at them?

It's a safety feature for the brake switch. This switch is the one that turns your brake lights on and off. It also deactivates your cruise control when your hit the brake pedal. If the switch doesn't work, then your cruise won't turn off when you hit the brakes. So, it does a resistance check to make sure the whole brake light/switch circut is fully working.

It is for this reason that you cannot get LED tail lights because they change the resistance in the circuit. But get this, even if you make you own LED tail lights that work fine with cruise control, you will need an engineers certificate because it changes the mechanical running of the vehicle (weather that be manual operation or automatic, it still changes it) re: Deactivation of cruise control...

We've replaced the fuse, with a new one even though the old one looked ok, haven't changed bulbs because they both looked fine but we'll give that a go, it can't hurt! I just thought it would be too much of a coincidence that both bulbs blow at the same time. Also the cruise control problem was existant months before the brake light problem.

Ahh, the joys of not having Cruise Control on my vehicle

I had to replace my brake lights due to one being out last week, went to get the LED ones but they only had one in stock :( So I got normal, mentioned to my dad I was contemplating the LED ones, he picked some up elsewhere for me the next day, unfortunately they were red-LED and were barely visible through the red lens of the stock light, so gonna replace with white ones and see how they look through the lens.

Well, as i stated, whats worse then not having cruise control is having LED tail lights that work with cruise control, cause this can lead to a very dangerous situation...

Yeah I can imagine, I would hate to have cruise set at any speed and not clicking off as I try to slow down.

I've NEVER been a big fan of CC though, used it in a friend's VX when we had to drive out of town to pick up a dog for her one night and I drove home, turned it on for the highway and turned it off again after five minutes, I just didn't feel comfortable with it, I like the feel of driving with my own foot - hence why I wasn't too bothered when I found my car on the market and it didn't have CC.
