hey guys
took the car into jarvis today (turns out its got some service history with jarvis which is nice seeing as there was nothing in the glovebox) just got the normal service done and wanted the handbrake looked at - turns out that the left wheel bearing has collapsed...and they wanted $560 to repair it! i think that is ridiculously excessive. how much should i be paying? ive called up my mechanic who says he will text me once he's worked out a price, but jarvis' quote just seems ridiculous... the car is an AU XR6 falcon. |

its the VCT version.
can anyone tell me how much i ought to be paying for this job? turns out the bearing hasnt collapsed at all, its just 'loose' - they were probably trying to shock me into OKing the repair over the phone when they mentioned what they did. |

i'll get CJs to look at it again, maybe jarvis were just trying to eek some extra money out of me. god i hate mechanics. yet to find one i can really trust. :( EDIT - my AU has just over 200,000 on the clock! so i would imagine that if theyre a common issue they wouldve been replaced already, maybe its just one of those niggling things you gotta do every so often, like with magnas and their timing belts :( |

The hub needs to be press out thats the only issue with doing them. I have to do them in mine this week, however having problems tracking down a press !
I think I paid like $80 trade for the bearings. |

CJs has quoted me $196 for the rear left wheel bearing. seems expensive i guess but the bearing is a $100 part, and $100 for labour on a job like this seems quite alright

Hi guys I had a bearing type noise in the AU so I figured I had to replace my front wheel bearings first I went to Supercheap $225 per side (shudder ) then Q Ford in Brisbane ($185 per side) where I bought one then I asked at a bearing place ($125) per side so I bought another one and still the noise was there went to a tyre man to see if he could find the problem and guess what some dipstick had put a directional tyre I had repaired on the wrong way causing all the noise it was the Mrs car and I didnt drive it much so it pays to check everything before spending heaps that you dont have to
thanks John |

yep totally happy with CJs work
total cost $590 which included full aircon regas (freezing cold now, great coz the next few days are 39 degrees) new left rear wheel bearing and new rear left rotor (apparently the rotor was ROOTED and rusted on because of the bearing) full transmission service (shifts so much smoother now and no jolt when i go from N to D or R) so yeah, pretty good. not the cheapest aircon regas but i was sick of running my car all over the bloody place to save $10 on a basic repair. all i have to do now is a wheel alignment and rotation and i should be a very happy XR owner |
