Default Mod's that don't work.

Thought this could be a good idea for a thread, so people can put down what they'll done that didn't work so others know not to try it.

AU v8 airbox hole at maf is smaller than maf, so i enlarged the whole leaving a nice straight shot for the maf, doing this knocks the maf way out of calibration, making it inconsistantly read higher at some flow points rather than others, causes to car, lost power, poorer idle, excessively rich at 3/4 throttle and very hard to tune cause it was unstable.

Fix replace airbox lid. Run's a lot nicer now!

Hahaha lol. Great minds must think alike cause I tried the same thing a month ago. Was utterly shocked at how crap the car ran after that. Definitely not recommended screwing with the MAF lol

doesnt air velocity work better than air volume in this case?

What i believe to be the problem is like what your saying, except that the maf needs the air entering in to be relatively straight, i've heard of recommendations of having 6inch's of straight pipe before them and so on, so when ive done that, the air has been entering at more various angles, well thats my theory anyway.

Could be right. Either way, altering the air flow has created some issues for you that havent added any benefit. Retuning it to stock was the best option.

Yep, it's hard to muck around with anything to do with the MAF.

Hey private9 regarding your air mod, it looks like the pod is sucking in a lot of hot air due to its position right over the exhaust, did this affect the car at all? I went to a tuner previously that reckoned less air was better than hot air, I don't know if he was right though. Is that why you've posted your mod in this thread? Interested to hear your view.

Lol good one private9. I can give an example where hot air worked better for intake and that was on my EA turbo, it was sucking from beside the exhaust manifold, when i put on a large 4inch i think intake with pod sticking directly behind drivers side headlight, it lost power and considerably, but that was more to do with the fact that i had an excellent water to air intercooler and any restriction in front of a turbo will make the turbo spin faster to produce the same airflow, much like when you stick you hand over the end of a vacuum cleaner.

about 3 months after I bought my XR6 I went and got it dynoed it was completely stock and pulled 118rwkw ,the mechanic suggested an aftermarket panel filter would give me upto 4rwkw ,so he whacked one in $100 and gave it another run (freebie) and it pulled 116rwkw : ..lol.

I'd imagine you would have to be moving to get the air into it to make a difference...

It's a high flow filter. Moving or not air still flows. If it is high flow, MORE air should be flowing.

Incorrect! Electric superchargers do work. They aren't brilliant, sure, but they do work. And if your K&N sticker didn't add 20+RWKW then you applied it incorrectly...

Indexing plugs seems to make the six slower..less torque.Iridium plugs make the car fly but a few days later it idles terrible...

extremely hard shift kits slowed my car down too..but Im talking about sideways strength gearshifts.

With that 2 dyno run's it doesn't really mean a lot, first of all the car hadn't had time to adapt learning to it at all, and 2nd that 2 dyno run's back to back can alter 5rwkw's or more, particularilly if you drove the car in dyno'd it, and then put cold air intake in and started it and dyno'd it again, heat soak sets in amongst other things, also the ecu has a startup map that it run's for a little while after starting which depending on engine temp takes a little bit before it turns off. Many dyno tuners will actually do 3 run's back to back each time when fine tuning because of this, that way they get more consistant results if you were to look at the 3rd run each time.

I have an AU3 VCT XR6 and six months ago had a VSI LPG system fitted at the same time I installed a new set of iridium plugs which my brother asured me where the best, after two months I had problems starting and rough cold running and misfiring, so I put a normal set of plugs into it and it's been good as gold ever since, don't know if it was the gas or what but the tips of the iridiums had completly vanished? on the upside I reckon I got more HP out of the gas conversion than I did out of a set of extractors dead set this VSI is awesome.
