I have a bet going with a mate that Au's are crap and i want to show him otherwise, he owns a vl turbo running stock boost auto and he can make the rear wheels chirp 1st-2nd. How would i get my Au1 futura to do this as well? it is stock as a rock however i have a Shift kit from Shiftkits.com which did make a noticable difference but still not enough for what im wanting, i also have a catback 2.5"? maybe changing to 3.9's?
Any help would be great, thanks guys? chris |

go get the valve body in the auto opened right up. will cost around $400-500 at a decent Auto shop. This will shift very firm, only downside it not reversible once done.

Get the shiftkit. Put it on the hardest shift setting. My last car (AU Forte) chirped the wheels and an AU XR6 in town does the same.
3.9 diff gears would be... interesting... with a shiftkit to say the least.

First real car years ago was a VH commodore with a 253 in it (OK 4.2 liter for the youngies)
When driving around with the auto in drive the 1-2 shift was normal...but when putting the auto in 2nd the 1-2 shift was very hard and firm. (same if manually shifting as well) This was great when I felt like being an idiot and mucking around, here I was chirp, chirp, chirp bang...... oh dear, that sounds expensive. : One new transmission later and I never did that again. Not too dear in the end for me but you might expect stuff to break if you like the chirpies. Enjoy it if you like it, I suppose I did too back then. PS I did speak to the auto guys back then, something about the pump pressure being split 2 ways when in drive bit when in 2nd the 1-2 change got full pump pressure. Anyone care to confirm?? Will stand corrected. Cheers M Last edited by hannem; 10-12-2008 at 05:53 PM. |

Is it ok to just get the gearbox to have firmer shifts instead?
My auto feels slushy changing up gears.

get a manual! i can chirp when shifting into second quite easily, and smashing it in at the top of 1st gear is just awesome.

I had a pretty hard shift kit in mine and it would kick the wagon out about a foot each gear change...it was too hard..

All ya gota do is wind up the adjustable solenoid in the gearbox. Cant remember exactly what its called. My 99 AU forte with exaust used to chirp 2nd at 80km/h. Like Stav said it can get a bit much. I think its the S5 solenoid in the auto that is adjustable? Someone will correct me on this. Believe me its possible. And the look on peoples face when a stock lookin AU forte changes gears at 80km/h and steps out sideways towards them is priceless.... on the track of course

Go down to your local transmission shop and ask them. Not all of them know about this though. I've had a few mechanics try to tell me you can't do it. Until they sat in the car and went for a drive. My older brother had his Tickford Fairmont done as well but not quite as hard as mine as mine was a brand new gearbox. All the solenoid does is alter the pressure that the oil galleries change the gears with. More pressure= less slipping of the clutchs in the auto (autos are designed to slip the clutchs a little to make smoother changes) Less slipping means harder changes and less wear on the box. Most people won't agree with me here but shift kitting the box will make it last longer as it eliminates any slip. Although it will also put huge strain on rest of driveline. I stuffed a diff and an engine mount from it smashing the gear changes. Mine would pull second gear with 245's under the back every day of the week. But you do get sick of the hard changes. When ya going for a nice sunday drive it still used to smash into.

I put a shift kit in my EF fairmont ghia and it chirps wheels. I hate using the shiftkit as it feels way to harsh on the rest of the driveline so I always switch it off and drive normaly.. Come wet though its a lot of fun (first, second and third sideways). accelerate up hit second and hold on lol.

To be honest, I cannot see how one of those shiftkits didn't make the wheels chirp 1st-2nd. Are you doing this full throttle or cruising along?
