If a car was manufactured with no seat belts in the back, is it legal to have occupants in the back?

I think the law is something like if the car was manufactured before 1969 and it doesn't have seat belts front or rear, then you are OK.

the rules that apply to your vehicle are the rules of the time, if it wasnt released with seatbelts and is still registered then its all good

random note, ever tried driving a car with a leather covered vinyl bench seats with no seatbelts, thats bad lol

Years ago (10?) one of my mates had an XR, no rear seat belts. It was perfectly legal.

So 10 years later it should still be fine to be in the back seat of an XR that has no rear seat belts.

It will be perfectly legal until:

1) You gat pulled over and charged, have to fight it in court, wis but have to pay legal expenses.
2) You have a prang and someone in the rear is hurt or killed and you will spent the rest of your life and all the money you could ever earn and then some fighting with your third party insurer as well as civil claims.

There is such a thing as duty if care, it will bite you. Put seat belts in the car....

if the car is un modified its legal, but unless its a concorse car WHY would you, seat belts are cheap, and in most cases the late 60's cars have all the mounts fited to the car at the factory, so go buyem and fit em, if you have a hit and your back seat passangers are ingured you will be kicking your self

thats about as likely as being sued by a pedistrian for your car having a chrome bumper bar.

my 1964 falcon had no seatbelts, front or rear. I installed some, the rear doesnt have provisions for them (ie no boltholes) but if you speak to a seatbelt supplier they can provide the nut and large washer to fit to the underside of the floorpan. its just a matter of drilling a couple of holes then.

I should've said "perfectly legal at the time". I wouldn't know now. Seemed cool when we were late teens, early twenties.

Fast forward to current day I'd be getting belts fitted if it's a daily.

I agree it's legal but unless it's a show car why would you bother just put them in.

I actually upgraded the lap sash belts front & rear in the ZF to inertia reel safer & more comfortable and cheap.
