Could be a stone lodged in a caliper.

Mrs has the same issue on her car.
Apparently some cheaper brand pads can make this noise due to the compound they use.

My AU does the same on the front, but I have AP Racing "race pads" which are a fairly hard compound, dare say your issue could be related to the pad compound..

front or rear...
have you sat the discs on properly..? i once saw a guy who had done his brakes, not sit the discs on properly and they were rubbing on the caliper..

if they're metal to metal then yes...
not if they're just close to needing replacing.. best bet is to see a brake specialist.. too hard to diagnose over the net mate.. need to hear and see it..

What pads are they exactly? I have the Bendix General CT's ( Ceramic) in the missus car and under hard braking especially when close to a stop or slow speeds they have this horrid grinding sound. Sounds like the pads are worn out and starting to grind metal on metal. From many sources I have been told this is normal for a pad of it's type.
I agree too, best to seek professional comment as without seeing them I could be waaay off the mark.
