Is there any way to bypass the smartshield on my AU3 wagon?
About 2 years ago the BEM died and I was lucky enough to buy a "matched set" of PCM, BEM, ignition barrel and key all from the same car, for about $70 on Ebay. Its all worked fine for the last 2 years, but now the dreaded RED HAND stays on when I try to start the car, and theres NO response from the starter motor. I've isolated the problem to the computers not recognising the key, but I've been quoted $380 for another "matched set" PCM, BEM, ignition etc, and also $380 for a locksmith to reprogram my key, but the car's not really worth that. There MUST be a way or else AU2/3s would never be stolen???? If anyone could help me (by PM) it would be much appreciated. Cheers Keith Jeffers (NOT a car thief) |

Not really any way around it for the average person, Most thieves flog the keys to take them anyway.
So the BEM has just forgotten the key ?

any ford dealer or a mechanic with a decent scan tool (snap on i believe can do it) will be able to do a parameter reset. this basically resets the keys to the bem allowing the car to start (obviously...) i'd imagine even someone like rac or lube mobile has probably got the gear these days, if not you will probably either have to tow it to a mechanic or your local ford dealer... i wouldn't have thought it would cost anywhere near that much either...

As said either ford or any decent mechanic with the scan tools can reprogram the keys as required. Ford did this for me when I did the manual conversion and they charged me $121. I hour apparently. My mechanic later told me he could do it in half an hour and about $35.
