Default GT Nationals 2050

On the back of Hulks much loved XR8 thread, and the heated discussion about desirability of the GTs, I've was thinking about how our GTs will fair in 30 or 40 years time.

The X series GT are at least 40 years old now, some nearly 50. A huge number of them destroyed, neglected (or simply used as a car should) or they did not survive the crimes of the 80s. As a result very few low km examples survived.

So now FPV GTs seem to be more pampered, they are often not the primary mode of transport, lots of cars around that don't get used. My 2007 BF GT now 7 years old has 4,000kms on the ODO, I'm not alone. So in 2050, I have a feeling there will be loads of low km GTs around and there won't be that WOW factor like today when someone rolls out an XW GT with say 40,000 miles on it, There will be 100s and 100s of low km day dot original GTs, GT-Fs R specs, Cobras..with books etc....

Values aside, I'm thinking there will just be loads of good well looked after examples around to the point the they really won't be that special...

Time will tell I guess.

Ive got a feeling it will end up being like old English car shows. Bunch of old guys in tweed talking about the good old days, and the odd young person who turns up wondering what all the fuss is about.

If you look around you just dont see the 10-20yo generation being all that interested in cars, letalone Falcons.

You may be right.

But you may have my kids who will be 40 taking my BF GT.....while they help me around in my Zimmer frame.

lets face it, I like GTs / Falcons, but in my circle of school friends and work friends the only car guy into old cars. It's only a small percentage of people that are into cars, that's all it takes.

The future for our cars depends on kids who haven't started school yet. Unless they are worth anything to those kids the cars wont survive.

My prediction is that the last GT Nationals will be held in the 2030's. That said, I'm looking forward to the 2017 Perth event to celebrate 50 years of the Falcon GT.

You've only got to look at the vintage & veteran car scene to see what's going to happen.
2 or 3 generations down the track, those thousands of fanatics, and hundreds of club members, dwindle down to a handful of original diehards, with very little new blood coming in to fill the void. Who will be left to organise the nationals, and how many will attend (or be capable of/still alive)?


Attracting "new blood" is crucial to keep the movement going strong.
The GT has 2 problems that work against it in this respect:

1. The cost is prohibitive to a lot of younger guys who may be potential lifelong dedicated fans like the majority of the previous & current owner base are.

2. Unlike the restricted (tariffs) car market in Australia in the late 60s & 70s where it all began and gained massive momentum, there is simply so much else out there on the market up against the affordable GTs that attract the younger generations more than the heritage of the GT.

You've missed what makes them "special" to the owners, sure there might be lots around, why does that make them less special to the person who has loved it for 40 years?

Unless by special you mean expensive

I'm only 33, my 22yo brother in law wants my Gt and so do plenty of his mates. Can we please stop assuming ALL younger people don't like aussie muscle?

couldn't have put it better myself! a gt is a gt so while the newer versions may not have the "racing appeal" of the muscle car era they are still a limited run version which shares those lovely two letters so are just as desirable to many of us

That's the thing they will be desireable but I'll just be interested to see if, unlike now, at a car show despite being 40 years old there will be be 50 unrestored BA GTs, 20 GT-Fs with delivery kms on the ODO, 30 BF Cobras that have not had their first service....etc

These days you might have 1 or 2 unrestored X series GTs as no one gave a **** and generally used and abused them, therefore when you do see an unrestored car it is out of the ordinary.

im not sure there will be unrestored versions of the modern gt's in 40 or 50 yrs due to the fact they weren't built to last as such. that's no disrespect to the cars however

i don't see the difference. i doubt Ford really built the older cars with longetivity in mind either. afterall the purpose of building a car is to keep selling. it comes down to how well a car is looked after in it's time.

Sorry man but I have to disagree with you, Im only 18 and have 2 ELs and I love my Falcons new and old.
I would love to think that one day I could buy an unrestored original delivery kms FPV GT40th or Cobra off an older guy, and cherish it and look after it as much as the past owner

One thing that needs to happen is they need to get out their hermetically sealed garages and be driven. How many heads turn when you drive your so shiny it blinds you ride lumping and howling it's way down the street. The younguns need to see and hear these things to keep the lust alive. And see the dedication put into these things not just in static displays in random car shows attended by a whole lotta people that are increasingly keeping the hair dye market alive. All it needs is a seed planted in their little heads. One interesting little thing I've noticed since Ford decided to bring the GT back is the number of old Stangs being pulled out and driven, it's awesome.

Ummm let's park an X-series coupe outside in the elements next to a b-series sedan for 10 years and see which one is reduced to a pile of corroded oxide first...

we'll first need to organise a permit from the Government to drive the car.

Log records with the motoring agencies to approve the use of 30 year old death traps on the road amoungst the automated fridges everyone else is being transported around in.

ensure the monthly road worthy check has been approved

Pay $10 a litre, from a specialised fuel supplier.

You don't take your car there!

You just take a holographic 3D image of the car with your iPhone38 then uppload it into the 2051 GT Nationals Car Show App. for scrutineering.
