Default Help! Central locking problem!

Hey Guys, I have a 1994 ED XR8, and the only real problem that I'm having at the moment, is that the central locking in the front doors is not working properly.

What happens is, when I lock the car with the remote, it appears to have locked the car, (the little inside lock thing goes down), but the car is still unlocked. I can lock the car with my keys, but when I do, it doesn't affect the central locking at all.

I had a look at the door, and cannot for the life of me figure out how Ford designed the central locking system. Either something had broken or it was seriously misaligned, but the central locking was in no way connected to the actual locking mechanism of the car.

All I saw was these two little plastic tabs, that move when I lock the car with the key, and they are located next to the rocker thing (where the plastic rod connects to for the interior lock tab) which when moved affects the central locking, but they do no touch at all. Besides I think ford would have had something a bit sturdier than two little tabs a couple of mm thick.

The rear doors work without a hitch, but it's just the two front doors.

Has anyone come across this problem before? I was inclined to think it was just random, but with both the front doors showing the same symptoms, it makes me wonder if this has happened before.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to how to fix it, other than take it to a mechanic?

Thanks.

E-series are known to have central locking issues at times, so no it's not a freak incident.

I've got some manuals and stuff here... lemme check it out, I have an EF however, but it should still help you troubleshoot.

Ok, appologies for the stick drawing, I couldn't find a diagram so I had to draw this...

Anyhoo, this is the central locking mechanism for the front door of my EF falcon. I'm hoping it's similar for your ED and gives you an idea of how all the pieces go together...

As you can see the actual electronic part (the actuator) is right down the bottom. Both the door handle, actuator, and snipper thing connect to a small lock arm thingy. You said that when you use the remote, the snipper thingy goes down, but it doesn't lock. That means it's all linking up ok, except for the lock part... so... my guess is either the small lock arm or the actual lock is broken somehow. You'll have to open up your door to check this all out, but hopefully that's isolated it a bit for you.

Pulling the central locking out of the doors can be a full day job, it's a pain in the a$s drilling rivets and finding how to unclip everything. : Just make sure you got a decent manual and plenty of patients/beer. :

If you need any more detail, try a repair manual (all mine are for the EF . Good luck, tell me how you go ;)

I checked the manual that I bought ages ago, and it was no help at all. What the problem is that I have is that the central locking (including the inside "snipper rod") are themselves not connected in anyway to the actual locking mechanism.

I opened up the drivers side door, (I didn't take the central locking out, just took a look at the setup) and can see where the central locking should connect, but I don't see anything that it would actually connect to. I doesn't seem as if anything is broken, I checked out the base of the door, and there was nothing there, but it does seem odd what they did to the door.

From what I can gather, when the lock activates (i.e. gets locked), it turns a little piece of plastic about 5mm wide and 4mm thick. I think that this should touch onto the central locking arm, thus pushing the arm up (and the central locking down). But what I don't seem to understand is why Ford would have used something so small, that could easily dislodge itself. I would have thought it would have been a much larger connection point.

Does anybody know if I'm interpreting the door right? Has something actually broken off?

Thanks

on mine not sure if they are the same there is a rod that connects from the actuator up to the lock then from that another one up to the actual button on top

When I press the central locking button it only unlocks/locks the front two doors, because I have an aftermarket alarm system and it was installed like this...Any way I can extend the central locking to the rear two doors? :

If you have a standard ford central locking the front 2 doors would be masters and the rear doors are slaves, means either fornt door locks/unlocks the rear doors do the same.

If it is aftermarket central would sound like you need to get to slave actuators for the rear doors and find the control module to plug them into.
