if you have noisy lifters, you could try a product called, lifter free up/lifter tune up, something like that. anyway you buy it from k-mart, made by nulon and its a liquid that you pour into the oil, pretty much upper cylinder lubricant, but for the top of the engine. it worked wonders on my falcon, and an old subaru we used to own. although it takes a couple of days to a week to start working after u pour it in. its about $10 a bottle, and thats all u need
hope this helps.

I think lifters are about $17 each, seeing as there are 12 its not a cheap thing to fix when you also tack on labour.

Try doing an oil change with some nice new (heavier) Penrite oil...

i did an oil change and they went straight away... Now nice and quite.

Flush the motor with a few litres of diesel while your at it, works a treat and keeps your insides nice and clean for a while longer.

Serious?

I'm guessing you don't actually RUN the motor while the diesel is in there, correct? lol

How do you make sure all the diesel is out before you put new oil in?

Btw, best recipe for degreaser I've ever used is 50/50 kero and diesel, so I guess there is some merit in it.

I'd be a bit worried about having some left over though.

run a few litres of diesel thru, then run some clean oil with the plug out so it drains thru, or u can put clean oil in and run the motor for 30 -60 seconds to get all the diesel out, not sure which is better, running it with diesel in or just letting it run thru hoping to get it all :P altho diesel should not damage ur internals

Diesel is basically like two stroke I guess as far as lubricating properties are concerned, I guess maybe just don't go for a thrash with only diesel where the oil is meant to be :P

Speaking of two stroke, I put ten litres of 2stroke in my old CFI falc, ran it completely dry again.

Can't of done the plugs much good lol...

I have already done an oil change and used an additive for noisy lifters but the noise remains so I am thinking of getting my mechanic to fix it. I just wanted a fair idea of what that might cost. If only one is making the noise do they only fix one or do they do them all?

it could be just like welche plugs, and spark plugs, "IF" one is going, you should do the whole box and dice.
just ring around and get a few quotes

The lifters are less than $10 each from a local supplier here.

That's right. Don't do just one. If one is stuffed the others aren't far behind.
Do the lot, it keeps things even that way too.
Buy the lifters and rubber rocker cover gasket yourself. Set of lifters is about $220 bucks and $15 for the gasket. It would take a mechanic around an hour to do.
