Get some brush-on rust converter (available at most hardware and auto shops) for starters. That will at least stop it rusting further and seal it until you work out your best course of action.

Hit it with a wire wheel and remove the rust, about 2mm of surrounding paint will be lost too. Then paint in primer and some colour. Use the closest colour match.
This will do until you have more cash and will not look that bad.

As LTDHO said, use a wire wheel, or even a dremel or similar rotary tool with a wire wheel attatchment for the more fiddly areas.
Basically try and get rid of all the rust before you do anything else (undercoat, bog, paint etc.) otherwise it will leak through and you will have rust marks down the side of your car and it will look even more dodgy.

Whats a wire wheel? This cant end well.
Circular wire brush, for use on a drill. If you take it back to bare metal (you will, it is already), youll need an etch primer, before the normal primer. Whatever you do, get some rust converter aswell, and use that before etch primer. |
