Default Gettin out of mexico!

So lately, a couple of my friends had moved up to Cairns (on different occasions), and today I found out another mate is moving up to QLD and it's got me thinking along the same path.

I've been planning to move out with a couple mates and share a place for a while in the new year just for laughs, and i've discussed it with them and they might like the idea of packing up and moving as well (even if it's only for a year or what not).

Only thing is, kinda lost as to where to start looking at going about it. My two mates who are up at Cairns are actually with other family or family friends, so they're no much help with rent/house prices etc.

So to anyone up that way, a couple questions.

Where are some nice spots to live, that aren't going to break the bank? I'd like to be fairly close to the water/beach and it doesn't have to be in QLD. I've been thinking about Kingscliff a lot lately, or perhaps somewhere like Byron. I don't mind looking further north though (I want somewhere warm all year round : ). Basically after an area that is relaxed with mostly genuine and nice people (ie. Not Sydney :P), but isn't TOO far away from a major city or built up area for reasons such as an airport when I come back to visit Melb, or just need general shopping without doing everything online, and most importantly, I'm looking to start a fitter/machinist apprenticeship when I can be on adult wages.

We were thinking of heading over to Torquay next year, so it's still only a few hours from Melbourne, and Geelong is close enough for bigger shops and services etc.

Any advice or tips? Are there some sites or numbers I should be looking at/ringing?

Any help's appreciated.

And yes.. I realise I just missed that QLD expo down here, :togo:

No real advice, but hey why not, the more the merrier in QLD.
Besides everytime someone leaves "Home and Away" they either die or move to QLD.

If you like byron and kingscliff yet don't want to pay the prices, try Murwillumbah, Ballina, Tweed heads, wollongbar etc. Murbah and tweed are like 15mins from kingscliff, ballina and wollongbar are about 20mins from byron.

Lots of work this way (ballina area)

Moving to QLD?

The good news is that its a long way from Melb and Syd.

The bad news is that it's full of Queenslanders!

(or should I say ex Victorians Mick)

flights are easy to get and cheap.... not sure of the work prospects but it has boomed up there recently.

Thats a myth, Queenslanders have been outnumbered by mexicans. Like I keep saying send the New South Welshman back they don't like it here anyway.

North Queensland you will need airconditioning in Summer can be extremely humid .

Bundanberg South have milder summers the sunshine coast is beautiful .

Townsville can be very brown ,dry and dusty Cairns is beautiful and green but gets a lot of rain .
If your young and go out to night clubs in townsville its usually 2 blokes for every female . Cairns is the opposite for nightclubs .

Can be hard to get rental accomadation up this way there has been a propertyy boom on and there are lots of fly in fly out miners living up this way so rents can be expensive, have a look on realestate.com.au.

Mackay its almost impossible to get housing very busy now due to mining but if you have a mechanical ,electrical ,welding type trade very easy for work due to mining boom.
Whitsundays is a beautiful place as well dont know about employment there but

Cheers guys, heaps more info than I thought.

Seems to be a few mentions towards a couple different areas. Will check them out.

Didn't really think of Townsville but i'll have a look. I'm not one for nightclubs at all, can't stand typical metro's and prefer to spend my money on cars :togo:
Don't mind going out to a couple venues/pubs in Melb though (espy, hi fi, Birmy etc), but it's not for picking up chicks anyway, THAT costs too much money. As long as there's a couple good waterholes near by it's all sweet.

Outbackjack - PM sent.

Tweed Heads is bloody nice, it's heartbreaking tho the amount of envirnmental destruction going on for housing, good chance will be ****ing off to that area Feb. next year tho. lol. or anywhere north up to Makay. Cairns is bloody nice, and judging by one dudes post of the chick ratio of 2:1 in the chicks favour, may have to consider that corner of the world, jokes:

Right now, I do interiors for KW trucks.

BUT, i'm hoping to try and get a fitter/machinist apprenticeship in the place that I move to, and start completely new up there.

Then again, I don't mind working any old job as long as it pays the bills.

Definitely wouldn't mind doing labour work on a farm or driving trucks!

I'm about 12 km south of Kinsgcliff at Hastings Point. Great area. Advantage is you get that "out of it" local friendly seaside/holiday town sort of living but have easy access to everything "else" from Tweed Heads up through to the Gold Coast and Brisbane if you want to go that far.
Kingscliff is pretty well self-contained. I usually shop at Sth Tweed though (it has an Aldi).
Consider Kingscliff, Cabarita Beach or maybe Pottsville or Fingal Head.

the cane farmers and fruit growers are always on tv saying the cant get workers for picking or driving the trucks to deliver the harvest so you might be able to get casual work there until you find a permanent job or your apprentiship.

would be seasonal so depends on what area you move to = what crops are grown = when the work is on.

cane harvest is on now for next couple of months, mangos should be starting then.
i remember last year that they said a lot of mangos were dumped because they couldn`t get drivers to take them to the markets.

everyone wants to work in the mines and makes it hard for the lesser paid jobs to find workers.
