Question stock auto with stroker?

hi all i'm just in the process of getting a stroker kit organised for my car to go to 347ci and i was wondering about my auto box, i was gonna get it toughened first but the bloke said it should handle the stroked engine if i dont hammer it to much! wat r ur thoughts?? :

Are you changing other stuff too, cam, heads, manifold, stall, the trans is only built to handle a bit more than factory power. Some last longer than others but a decent power upgrade should accompany a box built to suit the upgrade in power. Piece of mind is a great thing, even insurance for the box if u could call it that.

I would agree with the bloke. If you take it easy with the stroker - it should hold together well. The AU V8s have a pretty savage torque reduction strategy built into the ECU, so if you don't remove this (via the ECU edit/flash tune), it will help keep the whole box together for longer.

But, put the money for the auto aside, just in case you end up needing it. Whether you do it now or later, it's not gonna cost any different (maybe 1 or 2 hour's labour more if you do it later, because it may be easier to do while the engine's out).

Does the torque reduction stop you getting full power in first gear?

As long as you treat it nicely it will last a while, i have killed one box in my 347 but i dont have the stock torque reduction..

Personally i would say your better off giving it a beef up while the engine is out, mine died on the way to work and all of a suddon i had to find 2k to get it rebuilt. Better to be safe then sorry IMO

Oh, and you'll definately need to invest in a trans cooler...

If you can afford it now, then get it beefed up.

But I would expect it would last for some time as it is....with a couple of aditions. Install a big trans cooler, change the fluid every 50,000kms, and use the Edit or an electronic shiftkit to firm the shifts up (not tyre chirping crazy...just firm).

Ok I've finally got to ask...What's a Stroker?

Everytime I hear it I think of a dodgy old man running around a park wearing nothing but a trench coat.

it's just increasing the displacement ur engine has, my windsor has 302 cubic inches of displacement and by different ways u can incrase this such as going to a 347. another question does the t3/au3 xr8 pursuit ute have a slightly smaller stroked engine than 347 i was told they were only 342 or something. and is it worth getting a different box or strengthening my factory one, cos eventually i'm gonna have it blown.

definatley at least go for a propper shift kit.....its a valve body mod to increase line preasure..
what it does is firms up hte shifts, making them faster and less time slipping.
this will hugely increase the life of the trans with power - its the slipping which creates heat and destroys the BTR's..
also get a good trans cooler..
if you can afford it, a bit of stall wouldnt help...go for a 2500 - 2800 rpm stally

with my car, ive done shift kit, got a 2800 stall ready to slot in and a large cooler.....it should last just fine
