Pedal Box

so guys my pedal box is beginning to crack...

should i replace it or weld it up???!

do i have to take the whole dash out or just partially? does it take long?

Does anyone in sydney have a pedal box they are willing to sell>?

well you may as well fix the one you have, as it wouldn't hurt to beef it up. unfortunately the whole dash needs to come out to get anywhere near the pedal box bolts

the dash doesn't need to come out although it does make it a fair bit easier, I just unbolted my dash and moved it forward as far as I could, then somehow managed to squeeze and weeve the pedal box between all the looms and wires. Then weld it up and have fun getting it back in. :P

yep I started with the seats, centre console, steering column then started on the dash. expect to spend ~ 8-10hrs just pulling the dash out and reinstalling it. definetly a wknd job. having someone else around is highly adviseabble to, just for that extra set of hands. also if you can get a workshop manual it will help out heaps.

I got mine replaced a couple of weeks ago
I didn't have the know-how to do it, my mechanic charged $350 including labour, re-inforcing it is usually better than buying a new one!
If you do it yourself consider that you are saving $350+

currently stuck here.. took all visible bolts for bottom half still cant seem to get it out... seems very firm in place..

can't see the pics ? Have you undone the screws along the top of the dash ? under the windscreen, you have to remove the long plastic bit to get to them.

yeah i got quoted 700$ from one place... that was including a new cable and pedal box.. rip off!!

then another place quoted me for just the pedal box 450.

so ive decided to have a crack at it myself and try and re inforce the current one, as it is only slightly cracked...

Definately weld that sucker up, and brace it up good. I helped rustyEB1 put a brand spankers pedal box in his, and i think it was stuffed after 3 months or so. He then got the old one braced up good-as, chucked it in, and so far so good.

You dont need to take the crap out of the dash, it comes out complete.
Theres a bolt on either side, one below the fuse box and the other below the glovebox.
Two bolts holding the dash to the transmission hump, ahead of the centre console, and half a dozen bolts on he top of the dash below the windscreen under the cowling where the tweeters are.
Thats it, and a crapload of plugs to disconnect.

Removing the centre console would help, and the gear shifter.

Something we found was, if you are drunk and pulling the dash out/in, then labelling your plugs may help, there's quite a few.

Haha you shouldn't need to worry because 90% of them can only plug in to their designated spot except for a couple (I think it's the rear brake light plug).

It shouldn't take you that long to pull the dash forward and maneuver the pedal box in and out. I'm a dud first-timer and managed to pull out my old auto pedal box and replace it with the manual pedal box in a few hours. It's a pain in the **** but nothing too hard.

its alot better now. well worth fixing it rather than buying a new one

Now tomorro i need to run speaker wiring to the amp etc :(

So it's a common problem,eh? Mine cracked and just drilled (at a severe angle!) and bolted the bugger,seems ok so far.

no way known does it take that long to pull out the dash and re-install it. i can get the lower half and the centre console out in 10 minutes. although i've never pulled the whole dash out i couldnt see it taking that long.

anyway...good to hear you got it fixed mate. i hope this never happens to me! most likely will knowing my car!

yeah dashes arnt as hard as you think, BUT the headache is finding were all the screws go correctly, and getting it to not squeek :P

When mine died I bent it back and took the pedal out, cut 3mm off the 'tube' thats welded through the actual pedal, then refitted it.

I then got a rectangle of metal about 3mm thick, cut a hole in one end that would fit over the pedal pin, then shaped it to go from the unsupported end of the pedal pin forewards to the firewall, and bent the end 90 degrees and drilled a hole in that, so it could be bolted to the firewall.

That worked for about 4 years, still perfect now, except I smashed the car :S

thanks guys, sorta understand now! i couldn't even make out how it bolts/sits on the firewall. but i get the basic picture now and i'm guessing that the pin pulls away from the box.

i can see what you have done rollin, but i can't work out how infusion strengthend it?
