i did it in the EB without any tool just a spanner and slit it out by moving the pipes out of the way

Im planning on putting mine in soon. Ill let ultratune put in for me as I gotta do some other stuff as well.
Just some advice - When I bought the part from the Ford dealer he gave m some advise on installing properly - he said something about making sure you re-fit it properly and you can screw something up - but I cant remember what he said though.

I'm looking into this at the moment as I want to change the filters in the wagon and sedan. I'm currently gathering information as the Max Ellery manual's description and pics are not exactly what I'm after.

I have found a few helpful suggestions in a few threads here and there.

I may have a look at it in the next few days. Those dreaded clips, and the risk of stuffing them up have me somewhat tentative.

I'll see how I go! LOL!

I have done it before no dramas. Sometimes it helps to have a mate with a pair of vice grips hold on to the old filter while you undo it.

As for the clip, I got it off with nothing more special than a flat blade screwdriver.

I just went to Burson's Auto Parts and bought a filter for the sedan. I need to visually check the one on the wagon as it's factory dual fuel and they were different. I think the factory gas setups had slip on connector hoses on each end of the filter, whereas the non gas setup used one slip on connector and one screw in attachment. There is also a different filter for IRS setups.

Whilst I was there I asked the bloke about the springy clippy thingy and he showed me this product! For $9.90 I thought that would make these two changes and subsequent ones much easier.

I'll take some pics when I do the job in the next few days.

hmm thats interesting gk, i did mine about a month ago (au2 xr6) my filter had screw on fittings on each end, just wondering why yours is different or mine is different??

yeh,my last 3 xr6s(ED/EL/AU) had union(screw)type fittings both sides but my AU wagon has the pushin style fittings on its fuel filter,and was quite easy to push the clips in with out this tool.so long as you remove the fuel pump relay and run it out of fuel.

You're not running a live axle though are you?

I think the IRS models use a different filter.

I think you are correct George.
Mine is IRS and has screw on fittings only, so no hassle to change the filter

Makes you wish they simply used the screw on fittings on all of them! I'm yet to get under the sedan for a looksee and change, perhaps tomorrow.

How do I stop from bathing myself in fuel? Do I pull a fuse somewhere, or what? Do I just try to be super slick and swift? LOL! Some days I can't be as such, no matter how I try!

just pull the fuel pump relay...not sure where it is on au's but it's usually in the engine bay...ea's had it next to the battery, maybe try the engine fuse box?

Well step 1 is pull the relay, step 2 is run the engine until it stalls and then turn it over a few more times to be sure

Had a look under the sedan just before and got no joy on the filter change job!

I could not work out how to get the clip undone. I wasn't even sure which bit to push on with the screwdriver (yep $10 special tool was useless!).

Here are the pics of the clips, perhaps a few of you could help me work it out!

You can clearly see the clip on one end of the filter, the other end of the filter was attached with the nut, which was sort of siezed, so I didn't even get that off! I didn't use the WD40 though, as I wanted to work out the clip first.

The other clip (not attached to filter) probably shows what I'm up against better. I wasn't sure whether to

1. Push up or down with the screwdriver on the ridgy bits
2. Try to push in the smaller tab like thingys
3. Squeeze the ridgy bits with multigrips! I tried all three with no success.

Perhaps I should have pushed in on the ridgy bits (like you would squeeze with pliers or multis) with two stubby screwdrivers?

Can you who have managed to get this clip off successfully point out what I should try please?

GK sorry mate I dont really even remember how I did it.

But try pushing the pipe as far onto the filter as you can
Then squeeze the rubber groovey bits together and withdraw... otherwise perhaps attempt to pry them off. Either way there is a metal groove on the filter that you need to be aware of because that's where it clips on. The new filter should come with a plastic clip on the end which should give you a bit of an insight.

For the screw end mine was siezed also and I needed a mate to hold it with vice grips while I undid it.

Put your $10 tool around the filter pipe below the hose and clips hold it tight and with your second and third hands push the hose and clips down onto it, real PIA under the car though. If you want to practice the connection to the the tank is the same and easier to get at

then push down on the tool, then slide the tool up to the ring on the filter, then the hose should slide off

That's what I thought, his description of the positioning of the tool was clear, I just wanted to know how the tool actually released the clip. LOL!

To this point, no one has been able to explain how these clips work. That might be useful info for those attempting this later on.

So it appears the tool slides into the clip, releasing the lugs or whatever, allowing the hose to be pulled off.

That was quick photoshop BTW! LOL!

It also appears I was a tad hasty declaring the $10 tool useless! LOL! I guess a tool is only as good as the skilled person using it, and the understanding of how it all works. There's my first philosophical comment for 2007!

Job is done, but the tool still didn't do its job!

I smell like petrol from the lot contained in the filter LOL! But I'm glad it's done.

Couldn't really get any pics though, but I will do a write up, perhaps when I change the one in the wagon over the next few days, I'll get some more pics that will be of use.
