The user-pays scheme, based on the weight of a vehicle and the distance it travels would use global positioning system (GPS) technology to track vehicle movements, Prof Hensher told AAP after the seminar.

Germany had introduced the system in all its freight trucks and Oregon in the United States was trialling the scheme in passenger cars...

In the end, we are all gonna get screwed by them anyways, whichever the system they use...
Even tho we vote, is it really gonna make a difference? i think not..

Put the GPS system in under the guise of "Fuel taxes" and proceed to use it for busting peoples asses for missbehaving. nice. Bring on 1984. (George Orwell book, Big Brother and all that crap...)

no i dont think so either. think about the reliability of the system. i would imagine there is a body that collects all this data for each car/truck and records it on PC. now you know what government bodies and computers are like. you could find yourself paying for 20000 extra Kms that you didnt travel, then YOU have to go and prove otherwise.

If they scrap fuel taxes, then you can be certain the new user pays system based on mileage will leave you worse off. Every time they seek to revise the system and introduce a "user pays" system - the people get screwed. The high users pay more and lower users pay the same as before

Great idea...NOT. I'm sure people in remote areas of NT will be really happy their 600km round trip just to buy groceries will cost them even more now.

but.... most of us use more fuel per km than other drivers... so we might end up a bit better off...

doubt it tho.
