we currently have a Fairmont wagon EF (built dec 96)
running duel fule/ Parnel gas sytem, 270,000 on the clock, serviced todate (by us)running well. Now due to age and the exstensive kilometers, we average 20,000 to 30,000 a year, we are considering whether to keep fixing as age sets in or to lash out and update to BA .. love the fairmont , but is BA a wise choice have heard some stories about BA on gas that dont sound promising, (cutting out) Ef fairmont has been a nice car , Is it better to refurbish and upkeep? Welcome aboard matey, if the EF is starting to give trouble, there are other options besides a BA. Even an AU Fairmont with ultra low kms and good service history would potentially be 90% as good for a 3rd of the price. Also compared to the resale loss of the BA, maintaining the EF to a high standard wouldn't be hard at all, though there's something to be said for the new car smell. Best of luck with the decision.

Yeah im in the same predicament. My EL is is nearing the 200,000 mark, and i am looking to update to a BA before i have to spend any big money. But along the same lines, i have heard a few bad things about the ba, and wondered if a series 3 AU would be a better choice??

I dont think you will have any quality worries with BA, some things are much better , some are a compromise. I run a very early release BA XR8 and ran an EL and two EBs previously. Quality has not decreased, things have moved on. They are all excellent Motor Vehicles and with MarkII BA you can be sure they are very well sorted. The decision is yours, but don't be bush-whacked into thinking BA is in any way inferior! |

No duel fuel on the BA, and i havn't heard too many good things about the e-gas engine. My dads BA wagon (e-gas) is pretty crap, his AU1 was a much nicer car all round, plus it was duel fuel. I'd look at AU3. Plus the BA Wagons don't come in a Fairmont.

AU3 Fairmont Wagon is what id be after in your case. Can pick a good one up for around $20k now, and you'll still retain all the features you're used to from the EF (climate control etc etc) although in a better and more up to date package.
The EF's have had their day!(im so going to get flamed for that!)

Go the BA mate, it's in a league of it's own compared EF/EL/AU.
It's has such a nice ride and heaps of power, and personally I prefer the styling. Not to mention resale compared to the latter. |

The e-gas Falcons are abit of a mixed bag. They seem to behaving all sorts of problems, with stalling and not starting the most common. They were released as a predominately fleet car but due to reliablitly issues they are not selling as such.
My advice would be to buy a BA wagon and fit an aftermarket LPG set-up. You can have your dual fuel using the OMVL kits as so far they seem to be more reliable than the factory kit. www.sprintgas.com.au sell the LPG kits for the BA's.. I have 2 of these kits fitted and I would say they run as good as any of my AU's.

wasnt there reasons Ford didnt offer dual fuel fitment?
ULP engines not handling it? if u want lpg, I'd get a late AU (fairmont ghia??) on dual fuel.

I would go for an AUIII Fairmont wagon as they are a bargain compared to the BA and better equipped.
The resale of Fords is so poor don't buy new and with the BA that means an early model of the BA and I would advise only looking at the last model run of a series never the first for obvious reasons. |
