i was reading somewhere that oxygen sensors need replacing every 50,000kms.
My car sometimes gives off a fuel smell, can miss off the line when i accelerate heavily at times and idle occasional seems a bit rough, nothing too major and fuel economy is around 300kms 55Litres city driving no traffic The car is a 1999 xr6 auto with 180k's the following are brand new in the car so are not an issue - Plugs (ngk xr6 plugs) - leads (motor craft) - coil pack (original bosh) - fuel filter (replaced by local mechanic unsure of brand) - Earthing kit (stinger) Can the o2 sensor need replacing, how would i know for sure |

if you feel it needs replacing , then do it .. It will improve your cars Economy abit

Your engine does not read from the o2 sensor when accelerating hard
An o2 sensor can be tested with a scan tool or an ocilloscope, it is better to test than guess

When mine went on my old DL LTD it started idling rough and the fuel consumption at cruise went nuts, jumped from an average of 8Lt/100Km to well over 15... honestly for what the things cost I'd just change it and be done with it... then it becomes one less variable in the equation

Cheap enough and easy to replace but tnothing to do with your problem. Just pull the plug and see if it makes any difference without the oxy sensor at all. Bet it doesn't. I would have said its a coil pack prob but you've been dowm that track

i bought my oxy sensor off ebay for $55, and am about to put a set of reco injectors in my auii to see if that helps with my fuel guzzling problem.
