Looking back on our trip to Tasmania last week, it's made me realise the things we do.
Getting onto the Spirit Of Tasmania was our first hurdle... we get in line and see this massive ramp going up to the boat on a fairly steep angle, "oh shit the car wont get over that!" then there was the speed bumps when getting off the car "oh my god". Everywhere in Tasmania we had to dodge speedbumps, avoid entering shopping centres and drive past perfectly good motels all because the sprint was just too low to get into the entrance. At one place we parked the car and walked a km because the car was too low to drive on the road! : So that brings me to my question, what stupid things have you done because your car is just too low? Even though they are "too low" and we have to go to these extraordinary efforts to miss speed bumps and what not, why do we keep them that way? Thoughts? Krys

Got a rather stiff road hugging suspension put on the ED.
Then had to drive 1,400K's back to Newman From Perth. Happily enuff the car handled wickedly on the streets of Perth , infact couldnt fault it. It wasnt until I hit the Gt Eastern Hwy that I realised I will be needing a Kidney belt as the car nearly shook itself to pieces on that bloody p.o.s. road.

The only place my car scrapes is at Hungry Jacks in Croydon. The speed hump on the exit of the drive-through is a killer. Oh mine is an EL with Kings superlows.

Yeah krys's is pretty low. I think its standard sprint hight, im not sure..
Damo's is comparible, but i have yet to see them both together. Only on occasions do i scrape, and thats just the exhaust. Most speedhumps that look dangerous are either missed, or taken over an angle. I rarely have trouble, and this is the reason i have yet to put shorter shocks in the front (as i dont want to scratch the front skirt) . Its a EL with superlows as well. |

I think any reasonably low car would have some probs with 3 adults in it, a tank of fuel and a boot full of luggage.

Thats a good point MissUnderstood. Its not often I have a full car load.. But when I drove up to queensland I had 4 people in the car and the rear full of stuff.. it was scraping alot easier.. in carparks, etc. And it also unbalanced the car a bit... If i took a roundabout quick the front wheels would actually screech and the rear end didn't move. lol

my car is too low for my driveway, let alone the maccas in geelong.....
also scrape on the entrance to kfc in corio...... other than that its only when my car has more than me in it that speedhumps are a problem... perhaps it will be more problematic when i have the front pulled down level with the rear....... |

Had my 1st scrapage moment last night... leaving the local bottle-o with a carload of mates & CRUNCH! The driveway angle was OK for the front bar, but the towbar copped a bit of asphalt grind! :

I've only scraped about twice in three years but I still have the stock suspension. The only reason I scraped was because I came out of the driveway way to fast. The towbar was good for that situation. The self-levelling system still works, which is quite rare! I can load it up to the extreme, and it still does sit level!
My parents EBII wagon, on the other hand is an 8 seater (front buckets, 3 in the back), and has scraped many times. When the family was younger (I have a family of 8), the wagon was great but now we are older, if we all sit in the car, the back sits very low, and it scrapes every speedbump. Last year we took it on holiday, and when dad went to do a 3-point-turn in someone's driveway, backing out, the car made the most horrible scraping noises. It was either the towbar or the exhaust. Not good.

The sprint doesn't look awfully low from the outside, but without anybody sitting in it you can't roll a coke can underneath it without it catching on something... so with 3 people, a boot full of luggage & half a tank of fuel it was scraping on absolutely everything.
I can't imagine what people thought with the extremes we were going to to avoid scraping out! We weren't game to even fill up with fuel completely because we were too worried... small rocks & twigs were getting caught underneath there, it was really quite frightening! The things we do to have a low car. tehhee.

Which part of the state did you visit the most FordGirl?
I'm based in Launceston and I can't say I have any problems with speed humps or driveways, apart from Kings Meadows Autobarn. But a handy 45 degree angle exit avoids any scrapping.

Methinks your suspension is not stock. You shouldn't be having that many dramas. Having said that, some speed humps are just terrible and my stock Laser has been known to scrape even though I take all care. :@
Looks like a nice trip anyhow, hope you got some pics |

With two passengers and an esky in the boot, we had sparks flying from the undercarriage of the ED as we drove accross the westgate bridge... They build those Lukey mufflers strong i tell ya, we made it all the way to Naracoorte (SA) from melbourne with the muffler in tact after we reloaded the car and put the esky in the front.
My car previously scaped on EVERYTHING but i've had to un-lower due to going through 3 sets of shockers in a few months, and because i couldn't get over the speedbump near my house (it was resting on the sills almost every time and i practically needed to get out and lift my side to get over it) My car didn't seem or look that low though :(
